First Read of 2024

⭐️Overall rating:3/5

There was a lot that I wanted to like about this book. The fact that it comes from an indie author. The book being a dark retelling of Robin Hood, which promises adventure.

There was a lot that I disliked about this book. A lot of the characters felt flat. It was in the same sense of show me their angry, don’t tell me their angry. Reading “I’m angry” every chapter didn’t help with the character growth.

A few characters stood out to me. Laith needs to be protected, and I finished this story because I hope he does well.

I’ll read the second book, because I’m hoping the author learned from this one and grows as a writer. The world building is there, but the characters just need to be fleshed out a bit.

2024/1/3 Edited to

... Read moreAfter diving into 'A Forest of Vanity and Valour,' I've been thinking a lot about what makes a dark retelling truly stand out. There's something incredibly intriguing about taking a classic tale like Robin Hood and twisting it into a grittier, more complex narrative. We all know the legend, but what happens when the lines between hero and villain blur, and the forest hides more than just outlaws? This book, as a 'Dark Robinhood Retelling,' promises exactly that kind of delicious subversion. One aspect that always captures my attention in fantasy is an 'Interesting Magic System.' Even if a review doesn't delve deeply into the specifics, the mere mention of one piques my curiosity. In a dark fantasy setting, magic often isn't just about spells and enchantments; it can be a source of corruption, a hidden power with a heavy cost, or something ancient and untamed. Imagining how magic intertwines with the Sherwood Forest lore, perhaps giving characters like Laith unexpected abilities or challenges, truly elevates the world-building potential. Does it involve ancient forest spirits, forbidden rituals, or perhaps a magic that mirrors the moral ambiguity of the characters? These are the questions that keep me turning pages, hoping for a system that feels organic to the dark, re-imagined world. Another compelling element often hinted at in such narratives is a 'Villain to Hero Plot.' This arc is incredibly popular for a reason: it allows for immense character development and moral exploration. We see a character, who might start on the wrong side of justice or with questionable motives, gradually evolve, perhaps through redemption or a shift in perspective. It challenges our preconceived notions of good and evil. For a character to truly transform from villain to hero, their journey needs depth, internal conflict, and believable motivations. This kind of plot can make even seemingly 'flat' characters incredibly dynamic if the author explores their inner turmoil and the external pressures that shape their path. It’s about understanding why they make the choices they do, and witnessing their struggle towards a different path. When I'm considering books by indie authors like A.P. Beswick, I often look for these fresh takes on familiar tropes. A 'Dark Robinhood Retelling' with an 'Interesting Magic System' and a 'Villain to Hero Plot' offers so much potential for a unique reading experience. It makes me wonder about the deeper themes the author explores, the secrets hidden within the misty forest, and the true cost of heroism when society itself is flawed. Even if a book has areas for growth, the ambition behind such a concept is always commendable. It reminds me that exploring stories from independent voices can often lead to the most surprising and thought-provoking reads, even if they're not perfect right out of the gate. For anyone searching for a book that reimagines legends with a darker edge, keeping these elements in mind can help set expectations and truly appreciate the author's vision.
