Nightbane, an emotional rollercoaster
⭐️Overall rating: 5/5
This is 100% going to be a series I follow up with.
👍Pros:
I liked that while the curses were broken, it wasn’t just a party for everybody. Isla had to work through anxieties and low moods. She had to learn how to use powers. Isla also had to learn how to trust and get past her traumas.
Loved that Ella was mentioned and we got to see more of her. It felt like there was still a connections to the first book.
Also loved the introduction of Lynx.
This book takes place both before and after the Centennial. It was very clear at the start of each chapter, and I think it really think it provided fun insight into her past, it better contrasted her growth, and we get to see more of the lore in this world.
There’s also a handful of spicy scenes in both the past and the present. It also mildly ties into the plot.
👎 Cons:
Maybe it’s just me, but I really hate that any time Cellest was mentioned, it was always mentioned as Cellest-Aurora. I understood that even when Isla was working through her trauma. However, I read the first book and I know who she is.
I also was bothered she didn’t seem to practice with her other powers other than Wilding until the end. I wish that was explored a little bit more, but maybe we’ll see that in future installment.

So, you're curious about the world of Nightbane? Let me tell you, Alex Aster truly built something special here. Unlike some fantasy novels that dump all the info on you at once, Nightbane unfolds its setting beautifully. The story seamlessly jumps between 'before' and 'after' the Centennial, which I initially thought might be confusing, but it totally works! It gives you this incredible insight into the lore and history without feeling like a textbook. You get to see the world evolve, understand the weight of past events, and truly appreciate Isla's journey. The imagery of a 'floating castle' and 'crystals' from the book's cover really comes to life as you read, hinting at the unique magical elements woven into this world, making you feel completely immersed in its detailed landscape. For those wondering if Nightbane is just a standalone or part of a bigger picture – it definitely feels like the latter, and I'm here for it! As a huge fan of ongoing sagas, I was thrilled that this book left me eager for more. There are clear ties to the previous installment, especially with characters like Ella making appearances, which really grounds the story in a larger universe. You can feel the potential for so much more lore, more character arcs, and more magic to explore. It's not just a single adventure; it's an unfolding epic, and I can't wait to see where Alex Aster takes us next in this 'Nightbane series'. Okay, let's talk about Lynx. What an introduction! Without giving away too many spoilers, Lynx adds such an interesting dynamic to the story. For me, what stood out was how his presence challenged Isla and pushed her growth. He's not just a side character; he plays a significant role in her development, especially as she learns to trust and overcome her past traumas. His character is intricately woven into the plot, adding layers of intrigue and, dare I say, some much-needed tension and chemistry. If you're a fan of compelling secondary characters who genuinely impact the main protagonist, you're going to love Lynx and his mysterious allure. And for the burning question some of you might have: 'Is Nightbane spicy?' The short answer is yes, absolutely! But here’s the thing I appreciated: it’s not just spice for the sake of it. The intimate scenes are woven into the narrative in a way that feels organic and, surprisingly, contributes to the plot and character development. It's a true fantasy romance, so expect passion and intensity that adds depth to the relationships. It's enough to give you those butterflies, enhancing the emotional rollercoaster mentioned by many reviewers, without overshadowing the magical world-building or the character's personal struggles. It truly delivers on the 'Romance' genre promise highlighted on the book's graphics, blending heat with heart. Beyond the specific elements, what truly makes Nightbane a 5-star read for me, echoing the '5-star rating' on its review graphics, is the sheer emotional depth. Isla’s journey is far from easy; it’s a raw exploration of anxiety, low moods, and the arduous process of learning to wield newfound powers while grappling with past traumas. Alex Aster doesn’t shy away from showing her struggles, making her growth incredibly relatable and rewarding. The 'Plot Twists' mentioned in the book's summary are genuinely surprising and keep you on the edge of your seat, adding to that rollercoaster feel. It’s a testament to the storytelling that I felt every one of Isla's triumphs and setbacks, making her story one that truly resonates long after you turn the final page.
