The Hate U Give should be on everybody’s TBR

⭐️Overall rating: 5/5

This story was so well written that I had to look up if it was fiction or non-fiction. It had me thinking about BLM, about my own privilege as a white person, and about how our words have power.

A big moment that stood out to me was when Starr was calling out her friend’s racist actions. How even if everybody laughs, it doesn’t make a joke okay if it’s at somebodies expense. Also that the hurt can be carried by a person even years later. A big message from this story is that words matter, and there’s a lot that you can do when you let others hear your voice. It may be hard. It may require bravery. Words are a tool and allow us to do good in the world.

The Hate U Give is a great book and I think it’s one that everybody should read. Just for the sheer reason that it allows you to put yourself in somebody else’s shoes and find reasons to relate to their struggle.

... Read moreThe Hate U Give is more than just a book; it’s a vital commentary on contemporary social issues, particularly police brutality and systemic racism. Angie Thomas masterfully presents the story through Starr's perspective, which not only enhances understanding but also deepens empathy. Readers often find themselves reflecting on their own positions within societal constructs, making it a highly relevant read for today's climate. The narrative raises profound questions about justice and responsibility, prompting discussions about the importance of speaking out against injustice and supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. Moreover, the book resonates with young adults and helps them navigate their own experiences with race and identity. Studies have shown that literature featuring diverse voices can lead to greater cultural competence among readers. By portraying emotional truths and complex relationships, The Hate U Give encourages readers to engage with their surroundings and recognize their capacity to effect change. This book should be on everyone's TBR list as it provides the necessary context for understanding the challenges faced by marginalized communities. Through rich character development and poignant storytelling, Thomas leaves a lasting impact, urging young readers to harness their voices for good.
