Shimmer of light behind planetary object..
this was challenging more than I thought it was going to be. apparently making it obvious that there's a hint of light emanating behind another object can prove to be more difficult than you initially think
but I'm so happy I'm very proud that I was able to get it looking the way I wanted it to

Creating a convincing shimmer of light behind a planetary object is a subtle yet impactful technique that can significantly elevate the depth and realism of space paintings. From my experience, one of the biggest challenges is balancing visibility and subtlety—making sure the light doesn’t overpower the main subject but still communicates the glow effectively. In practice, I found that layering translucent glazes and carefully manipulating gradients helped simulate the ethereal glow. Using soft brushes and varying opacity levels allowed me to control how the light diffused around the planetary silhouette, giving it that natural shimmer effect. Additionally, studying real astronomical phenomena, such as solar eclipses and planetary transits, provided valuable references for understanding how light behaves in space. One tip I’d share is to experiment with the light’s color temperature; warmer hues can suggest atmospheric effects or reflected light, while cooler shades can evoke the coldness of space. Lighting placement is also crucial—position the shimmer so it complements the composition and guides the viewer’s eye logically. For artists interested in this technique, patience and incremental adjustments are key. Often, what looks like too much or too little light initially can be fine-tuned through layering and blending. Above all, don’t be afraid to revisit your work multiple times; subtle details like these often emerge gradually and are well worth the extra effort for the final impact. Using hashtags like #paintingspace, #spacepainting, and #eclipse can also connect your work with communities interested in celestial art, providing inspiration and feedback that can enhance your artistic journey.
