Honey & Spice Book Review

For the month of April my book club read “Honey & Spice” by Bolu Babalola.

I have seen so many reviews on this book and I went in with very high expectations for it and it did not disappoint! I really enjoyed this book and it was a great read.

To me this book reminds me of the shows “Growish”mixed with “Dear White People”.

I really liked the way the characters were written and how each of their stories developed throughout the book.

The chemistry between Kiki and Malachi was written so well and thought out. I could literally feel it from reading the book.

I do like the way the book ended but I definitely could see a part two for this book. I really would like to see how Kiki and Malachi’s relationship continues to develop through college.

If I had to give one critique I would say I wanted to know more about the backgrounds of Kiki and Malachi. The book definitely touched on it but I feel like getting into that more would have definitely helped with the overall plot of the book. I would also would have liked to see more communication and dialogue with their parents as they are going through life in college.

I really enjoyed the book and I give it a ⭐️Overall rating: 9/10⭐️

... Read moreOkay, so after gushing about 'Honey & Spice' in my main review, I just had to come back and chat a bit more about why this book truly captivated me. This isn't just another romance; it's a whole experience, and I totally get why it's become such a buzzworthy read! First off, let's talk about that stunning book cover! Seriously, if you've seen it, you know what I mean. The vibrant colors and imagery perfectly capture the essence of the story – the warmth, the cultural richness, and the undeniable spark between Kiki and Malachi. It's one of those covers that instantly makes you pick it up, and I think it does a fantastic job of hinting at the delightful journey inside. It gives off such a fresh, modern vibe, making it clear this isn't your grandma's romance novel. It definitely looks like a BESTSELLER right from the shelf! Now, for the question I know many of you are asking: what's the 'spice level' like in 'Honey & Spice'? Let me tell you, Bolu Babalola absolutely nails the slow-burn, witty banter type of romance. It's not about explicit scenes (though the chemistry is undeniable!), but rather the delicious build-up, the stolen glances, the sharp dialogue, and the deep emotional connection that develops between Kiki and Malachi. Their dynamic felt incredibly real, full of playful jabs and genuine affection. It's the kind of romance that makes your heart flutter with anticipation, rather than making you blush with shock. If you love a romance where the emotional intimacy and intellectual connection are just as potent as any physical attraction, then you are in for a treat. It's truly a masterclass in crafting a compelling, passionate relationship without relying solely on overt 'spiciness'. This book has that special something that makes it feel like a REESE'S pick – the kind of story that gets everyone talking. It’s smart, funny, and has so much heart. The way Babalola weaves in cultural elements and explores themes of identity, friendship, and family alongside the romance is just brilliant. It really elevates the story beyond a typical rom-com. It’s what makes it feel akin to shows like 'Grown-ish' or 'Dear White People' – it’s relatable, current, and tackles important topics with a light touch. If you're looking for a romance novel that offers depth, laughter, and characters you'll genuinely root for, then 'Honey & Spice' should absolutely be on your TBR list. You can tell from My Honest BOOK REVIEW that I truly loved it. It’s a fantastic read for book clubs (like mine, especially if you're interested in black authors!), or just for a cozy weekend escape. Trust me, Kiki and Malachi will live rent-free in your head long after you turn the final page!
