When you exercise, your muscles need oxygen to produce energy. Breathing properly keeps oxygen flowing in and helps expel carbon dioxide.

The simple rule is:

Exhale on the effort. When you’re pushing, pulling, or lifting against resistance, breathe out.

Inhale on the release. When you’re lowering the weight or returning to the starting position, breathe in.
