... Read moreHey beauties! So, my mini-rant about Ronald McDonald not being able to compare? It's all because I'm seriously obsessed with my vibrant red natural hair, and I know you will be too if you take the leap! Getting this voluminous natural curly hair to this shade of red was such a journey, and honestly, it was one of the best decisions I've made for my hair journey.
If you're a 'Natural Hair Girlie' like me, you know how much thought goes into any chemical process. My biggest fear was damage, especially since my natural curls are my pride and joy. But as I mentioned in my original post, it's truly all about the technique and the products you use. I didn't just walk into a salon and say 'make it red!' – there was research, condition treatments, and a lot of care involved.
For anyone considering going red, here are a few things I learned that kept my hair healthy and vibrant:
First, deep conditioning is your new best friend. Before and after the coloring process, I made sure my hair was as moisturized as possible. Weekly deep conditioning treatments with a protein-moisture balance mask helped immensely. This prevents dryness and breakage, which red dyes can sometimes exacerbate.
Second, invest in color-safe products. Your regular shampoo and conditioner might strip the color faster, so look for sulfate-free options specifically designed for color-treated hair. I also incorporated a color-depositing conditioner once every couple of weeks to refresh the vibrancy and extend the life of my red without having to re-dye too often.
Third, minimize heat styling. Heat can fade red color quickly and cause damage. I leaned into protective styles and air-drying whenever possible. When I did use heat, a good heat protectant was non-negotiable.
Fourth, protect your hair from the sun. Just like skin, hair can get damaged by UV rays, leading to color fading. A leave-in conditioner with UV protection or even a stylish scarf/hat can make a huge difference, especially during summer.
Finally, consult with a professional, especially for the first time. While I love a good DIY, for a dramatic color like red on natural hair, a professional stylist can assess your hair's health, recommend the best shade for your skin tone, and ensure even application and minimal damage. They can also guide you on the best post-color care routine.
Don't let fears hold you back from expressing yourself! My healthy, vibrant, voluminous natural curly hair is proof that you can have bold color without compromising hair health. It's an empowering feeling, and trust me, hair does grow back! So, what are you waiting for? Let's embrace those fiery red locks!
