More doodles
Hey Lemon8 fam! I've been on a major character design kick lately, and I just had to share some of the doodles I've been working on. You know how sometimes you just sit down with a pencil and paper, and magic happens? That's exactly how these came about! I've found myself exploring all sorts of whimsical and slightly spooky characters. For example, that red doodle sketch of a cartoon character with a wide, toothy grin and large eyes? He just popped onto the graph paper one afternoon while I was brainstorming for a fun project. There’s something so satisfying about seeing a personality emerge from simple lines. Then there’s the pencil sketch of the character with long hair, sharp teeth, and claws – definitely leaning into a more mysterious vibe. I love playing with dramatic poses and expressions, trying to convey a whole story just through a drawing. And don't even get me started on the serpentine character; that one was a challenge to get the flowing hair and elaborate outfit just right, but so worth it for the unique design! If you're looking to start your own doodle journey or want to dive into character design, here are a few tips that have helped me: Start Simple: Don't feel pressured to create a masterpiece every time. Begin with basic shapes – circles, squares, triangles – and build from there. Think of them as building blocks for your characters. Find Inspiration Everywhere: I get ideas from movies, books, nature, even just people-watching! Sometimes, a unique outfit or an interesting silhouette can spark a whole new character concept. Don't be afraid to keep a small sketchbook with you to jot down ideas or quick pencil sketches on the go. Experiment with Expressions: A character's emotion can tell a lot. Play around with different eye shapes, eyebrow positions, and mouth designs to give your doodles distinct feelings. A simple toothy grin can completely change a character's appeal! Don't Be Afraid of 'Mistakes': Some of my best character design elements came from what I initially thought were errors. Embrace the spontaneity of doodling! It's all part of the creative process. Use Different Materials: While I love a good pencil sketch on graph paper, try pens, markers, or even digital tools if you have them. Each medium brings a different feel to your art. Lemon8 is such a fantastic place to share your artistic journey and connect with fellow creators. Seeing everyone's unique doodles and character designs always inspires me to keep pushing my own boundaries. What kind of characters do you love to draw, or what inspires your doodle art?
