Reality Check: Behind the "Aesthetic" Mom Feed 🍋✨
Let’s be real for a second because I am drowning in a sea of perfectly curated Lemon8 grids, neutral-toned playrooms, and moms who seem to have 30 hours in a day.
My reality? It looks a lot less like a soft-girl aesthetic and a lot more like a colorful, chaotic command center.
Tonight, we were tackling schoolwork. As a mom to an amazing child with autism, homework isn't just sitting down with a pencil. It’s an entire therapeutic operation. Because I’m also a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), my living room turns into a clinic the second the backpack opens. We are talking:
Token boards primed and ready.
Behavior scales stuck to the table to visually check in on frustration levels.
Timers ticking down to the next transition.
Movement breaks scheduled every ten minutes to shake out the sensory overload.
Prompting functional language ("Mom, I need a break, please") instead of a meltdown.
Coaching through our cool-down strategies to help regulate those big emotions.
And an endless supply of high-value motivators (snacks, tech time, specific toys) just to get through a single worksheet.
I love my kid, and I am proud to be his biggest advocate. But man, I am tired.
Right now, I am trying to juggle being a present mom and working my job, all while mentally prepping to start my Master’s program in ABA next month. I’m trying to balance the budget, find an hour to study, and squeeze in a hobby so I don't lose my own identity in the process.
Oh, and the logistics? My boyfriend works third shift, so our sleep schedules are a game of ships passing in the night. I’m constantly coordinating and co-parenting with my ex-husband. I am running a household largely on my own, trying to stay true to my alternative style and who I am, while feeling like a shell of myself.
The mom guilt is heavy today. I feel guilty that there aren’t enough hours in the day. I feel guilty when work forces me to miss out on the little things. And honestly? I’m lonely. I wish I had that "tribe" everyone talks about. My family lives hours away, and my friends are understandably buried under the weight of their own busy lives.
It’s hard not to look at the highlight reels on here and feel envious. I want the clean house, the matching outfits, the peaceful mornings. But my life is beautifully messy, loud, and strictly structured just to keep the peace.
If your life doesn't look like a Pinterest board today, you aren't alone. We’re doing the hard work in the trenches, and that’s worth celebrating too. 🤍
