For Christmas this year, Ayana asked us for a room makeover. With the holidays happening, her little sisters bday in December, and my NC trip for Ayva’s cheer, we weren’t sure if we could pull it off (financially). We told her we couldn’t afford it and even though she understood why, she was so sad. So during winter break, she went to Kaua’i and O’ahu to visit family. With her being away & being a mom who always finds a way to make sh*t happen, I DID IT 🎉
I painted her bedroom, bought her a new bedframe (she had her full size bed on a twin frame this whole time🤦🏻♀️), got new curtains, a new vanity mirror, new rug, a body mirror, and new bedsheets + a comforter.
We told her she didn’t get much for Xmas gifts this year, so when she got back it’ll just be one gift. She was totally fine with it ! And As you can see, she was SO HAPPY☺️ and grateful for this big surprise ! She definitely deserves it and I’m so happy Ryan and I were able to pull it off!! Moments like this is what makes my mom heart sooooo happy 🥹 MERRY CHRISTMAS MY BABY 🩵
One thing I’ve learned from doing a room makeover on a budget is that planning and prioritizing really make a difference. When I started, I focused on the essentials that would create the biggest impact: a proper bedframe, fresh paint, and functional decor like curtains and mirrors. It’s amazing how upgrading a few key pieces can completely change the feel of a space and lift a child’s spirits. Since Ayana had been using a full-size bed on a twin frame, replacing that was a no-brainer and instantly improved her comfort and room aesthetics. I also chose items that would last and be versatile, like neutral-colored curtains and a rug that complements any future style changes. Finding affordable but quality items either locally or online helped stretch the budget without compromising on look or feel. Visiting family when the kids are away can give parents the perfect moment to create surprises, and that’s exactly what happened here. The reaction of pure happiness when she returned made every effort worthwhile. Moments like this underline how important it is to create spaces where children feel loved and comfortable, especially during festive times. For anyone considering a similar makeover, my tip is to think beyond just decoration—consider what your child needs functionally and emotionally. A room isn’t just about looks; it’s where they unwind, dream, and grow. Combining thoughtful details and personal touches, like a vanity mirror for self-care or cozy bedding, truly makes the space special. This project reaffirmed my belief that a little creativity and dedication can turn a ‘maybe we can’t afford it’ into a memorable and joyous gift.
