These are my favorite appetizer here, it’s a tempura jalapeño stuffed with tuna and cream cheese topped with eel sauce and spicy mayo
🍣Nagoya Roll 12/10
Tempura shrimp, crab stick, cream cheese, avocado & tuna on top. I’m not usually a shrimp fan but this was AMAZING.
🍣 Philly Roll 10/10
Tuna & macadamia nuts on top with crab stick, cream cheese and avocado inside.
🦞🍣Baked Lobster Roll 0/10
The lobster was over cooked, they used way too much mayo & it tasted like American mayonnaise rather than Japanese mayo :( very disappointing
🥭🍡🍨 1/10
The vanilla ice cream was good, but the mochi was old and dried out tasting and didn’t have any flavor :( 1 point for the Ice cream and the toothpicks made me laugh.
... Read moreThinking about your next sushi date and wondering how to craft the perfect menu? Beyond just picking individual rolls, planning a balanced and exciting sushi spread can elevate your entire experience! Based on my own recent sushi date, I’ve got some tips on how to build a menu that’ll impress and satisfy.
Starting Strong: Appetizers That Set the Mood
Don't skip the appetizers! They're fantastic for easing into the meal and sharing. On my date, the Jalapeño Tuna Poppers were an absolute standout. Stuffed with tuna and cream cheese, then drizzled with eel sauce and spicy mayo, these tempura delights were a perfect blend of creamy, spicy, and crunchy. When you're looking at a sushi date menu, consider something unique like these rather than just standard edamame. Look for options that offer a different texture or flavor profile than your main rolls – maybe gyoza, spring rolls, or even a refreshing seaweed salad to cleanse the palate.
The Main Event: Crafting Your Roll Selection
This is where variety truly shines. My date night included a mix: the Nagoya Roll with tempura shrimp, crab stick, cream cheese, avocado, and tuna on top, and a classic Philly Roll, which featured tuna and macadamia nuts. While the Nagoya Roll was surprisingly amazing even for someone not usually a shrimp fan, it's a great example of trying something a bit outside your comfort zone. For your menu, aim for a mix of raw and cooked options if you and your date have different preferences. Include a classic like a Philly Roll, California Roll, or spicy tuna roll, but also venture into specialty rolls with unique ingredients like those macadamia nuts or diverse toppings. The key is to discuss what you both like before ordering. And as a lesson learned from my Baked Lobster Roll that was unfortunately overcooked and drowned in American mayo, always ask about ingredients or preparation if you're unsure!
Beyond Rolls: Adding Variety to Your Sushi Date Menu
Sometimes, a sushi date menu doesn't have to be just rolls. Consider adding a few pieces of nigiri (sliced fish over rice) or sashimi (just the sliced fish) for a purist experience. If one of you isn't a huge fan of raw fish, look for other Japanese staples like chicken or beef teriyaki, or shrimp tempura – something that complements the sushi without overwhelming it. This makes the menu more inclusive and ensures both of you find plenty to enjoy.
Sweet Endings: Dessert and Drinks
No date is complete without a sweet treat! My experience with mochi was a bit disappointing – the yellow mochi was dry and lacked flavor, though the accompanying vanilla ice cream was good. This taught me to inquire about dessert freshness. When planning your sushi date menu, consider traditional Japanese desserts like mochi or tempura ice cream, but don't shy away from Western options if the restaurant offers them. As for drinks, a nice sake, plum wine, or even green tea can beautifully complement your meal. For a special touch, some places offer unique mocktails or Japanese sodas.
By carefully considering appetizers, varying your roll choices, adding non-sushi options, and finishing with a thoughtful dessert and drink, you can create a truly memorable sushi date menu that goes beyond just what's on the plate.
