Navigating PMDD: My Mental Health Journey

Hey everyone, 🌼

I want to open up about something personal—my struggle with PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder). It’s a severe form of PMS that impacts my mental health, motivation, and energy.

Staying Motivated

Motivation is tough right now. Setting small goals and celebrating little wins helps me stay positive.

Productivity Struggles

Some days, productivity feels impossible. Prioritizing tasks based on energy and importance has been key. It’s okay to have off days!

Mindful Energy Management

Managing energy is crucial. Short breaks, walks, and breathing exercises make a big difference.

Seeking Support

Talking to loved ones, joining support groups, or seeking professional help has lightened my emotional load. We’re not alone in this.

Self-Compassion

Self-compassion is key. Journaling and self-care routines have been my go-to for building resilience.

If you’re struggling too, it’s okay to seek help and take things at your own pace. Let’s support each other!

Stay strong. 💛

... Read moreHey everyone, I know sometimes when you're searching for answers or connection online, you might wonder if what you're reading is truly coming from a place of lived experience. I want to assure you, this is my genuine, unfiltered journey with PMDD, and every struggle and triumph I share is absolutely real. I’ve felt that isolation, that feeling of 'is anyone else truly going through this?', and I want to be that voice that says, 'Yes, I am, and you're not alone.' There are days when just getting out of bed feels like an impossible task, let alone tackling work or social plans. The brain fog, the intense fatigue, the emotional swings – it’s a full-body and mind experience. I've learned that these hardships, as overwhelming as they can be, have also pushed me to discover incredible resilience within myself. It’s like, in facing these profound challenges, I’m slowly, sometimes painfully, being shaped into a stronger person, capable of navigating what once felt insurmountable. When it comes to motivation, I've had to completely redefine what 'productive' means for me during my luteal phase. Instead of aiming for big, ambitious goals, I break things down into the tiniest steps imaginable. For example, 'clean the entire house' becomes 'wipe down one surface for five minutes.' Or 'write that report' becomes 'open the document and type one sentence.' Celebrating these micro-wins is crucial; it’s a way of acknowledging that even on the toughest days, I'm still showing up for myself. Managing energy is another huge one. I used to push through until I hit a wall, but now I’m much more mindful. My go-to breathing exercise is the 4-7-8 method – breathing in for 4, holding for 7, exhaling for 8. Even a quick 10-minute walk around the block, just to feel the sun or crisp air, can shift my mood and energy. I also schedule short, guilt-free breaks throughout the day, even if it’s just lying down with my eyes closed for five minutes. This isn't laziness; it's essential self-preservation. Seeking support felt incredibly vulnerable at first. How do you explain this invisible, cyclical battle to loved ones who might not understand? I started by sharing articles about PMDD with my closest friends and family, saying, 'This is what I experience, and it's not just 'bad PMS'.' Joining online support groups has also been a game-changer. There's an immediate sense of understanding and validation when you connect with others who truly get it. It reinforces that we are not alone in this fight. And self-compassion? That's been a journey in itself. My journal isn't just for venting; it’s where I track my moods, identify triggers, and, most importantly, write down positive affirmations and reflections on my small victories. It’s a space to remind myself that it’s okay to have off days, that I’m doing my best, and that my worth isn’t tied to my productivity during my PMDD week. Specific self-care rituals, like a warm bath with Epsom salts, listening to calming podcasts, or simply allowing myself to rest without guilt, are non-negotiable for me now. These are the tools that help me build resilience, turning each hardship into a step towards my own extraordinary journey of self-discovery and strength. So, if you’re reading this and wondering, 'Is this for real?' – yes, it absolutely is. This is my heart poured out, hoping to connect with you and make you feel seen. You are not alone in your struggles, and there’s immense strength in navigating them, one day at a time. Keep going. 💛
