My story with mental health in college 🧠

**Navigating Mental Health in College: My Journey with Chemistry**

Studying chemistry has been incredibly tough, both academically and emotionally. The workload, the pressure to perform, and the complexity of the subject matter have all contributed to a decline in my mental well-being. There were days when I felt overwhelmed, anxious, and even defeated.

However, through this journey, I've learned the importance of seeking help and taking care of myself. Whether it's reaching out to friends, talking to professors, or utilizing campus resources, I've discovered that support is available – you just have to ask for it.

I'm sharing this because I know many of you might be going through similar challenges. Remember, it's okay to struggle, and it's okay to ask for help. Mental health is just as important as academic success, and taking care of ourselves should always be a priority.

Let's continue to support each other and prioritize our well-being. Together, we can navigate the ups and downs of college life and come out stronger. 💛

... Read moreI know many of you are probably wondering, 'Is chemistry honors really hard?' And honestly, based on my own experience in college, the answer is a resounding *yes*, but it's also incredibly rewarding if you navigate it right. I remember the sheer 'complexity of the subject matter' feeling like a constant uphill battle. It wasn't just about memorizing formulas; it was about truly understanding intricate concepts, often abstract, that required a different way of thinking. This conceptual depth means you can't just skim the textbook; you have to engage with it, often multiple times, to grasp the nuances. The 'workload' is definitely another major factor. Honors chemistry moves at a relentless pace. One week you're mastering stoichiometry, the next you're diving into thermodynamics, and it feels like there's no breathing room. This constant influx of new, challenging information can quickly lead to feeling 'overwhelmed' and anxious. I found that effective time management became non-negotiable. Breaking down study sessions into smaller, focused blocks, rather than trying to cram everything, really made a difference. Then there's the lab component. Oh, the labs! Doing a 'solo lab' can be incredibly stressful. You're responsible for everything from setting up delicate equipment to performing precise measurements and analyzing results, often under time pressure. One tiny error can throw off your entire experiment, leading to frustration and that sinking feeling of being a 'failure'. My advice here is to prepare meticulously before each lab, understand the procedure inside out, and don't hesitate to ask TAs for clarification. Even if you encounter a 'mean professor' or a TA who isn't the most approachable, keep advocating for yourself. The 'pressure to perform' in an honors setting is immense. Everyone around you seems so brilliant, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself, which can lead to a 'decline in mental well-being'. I often felt 'anxious' about exams and 'defeated' after a particularly challenging problem set. What I learned is that it's crucial to acknowledge these feelings. Don't bottle them up. Reach out to friends, family, or campus counseling services. I sought out a 'tutor', and that made a world of difference, not just for understanding the material but also for boosting my confidence. Having someone explain things from a different perspective can unlock understanding you didn't think was possible. Beyond academic resources, prioritizing self-care is non-negotiable. It truly is 'just as important as academic success'. Make sure to 'take breaks' during long study sessions, get adequate sleep, and find ways to de-stress. Whether it's a quick walk, listening to music, or just stepping away from your books for an hour, these small acts prevent burnout. Remember what my 'advisor' told me, and what helped me realize I wasn't alone: many students find honors chemistry tough. It’s not a reflection of your intelligence, but rather a testament to the rigor of the course. And guess what? Despite all the 'emotional struggles', I passed with an A and a B. It is possible to 'struggle' and still succeed. Keep going, utilize your resources, and most importantly, be kind to yourself.

Mental health is always challenging. It's a struggle that some humans won't experience which I'm jealous of them. All we can do is stay on top of our symptoms.
