N5 Japanese Kanji: 本

Now the kanji 本 has different uses let's look at the kun and onyomi uses.

本 (Hon): This kanji commonly means "book" or "origin" when read as "hon." It is frequently used in words related to literature, such as 本棚 (hon-dana) meaning bookshelf. This is the Onyomi reading.

本 (Moto): When read as "moto," it means "origin" or "source." It is used in words expressing the starting point or foundation of something. This is the kunyomi reading.

Examples of how 本 (hon) is used:

この本は面白いですね。

(Kono hon wa omoshiroi desu ne.)

Translation: This book is interesting, isn't it?

私は毎晩、本を読みます。

(Watashi wa maiban, hon o yomimasu.)

Translation: I read books every night.

彼は図書館で本を借りました。

(Kare wa toshokan de hon o karimashita.)

Translation: He borrowed a book from the library.

Example of how 本(moto) is used:

アイデアの本は彼から出たんだよ。

(Aidea no moto wa kare kara detan da yo.)

Translation: The idea came from him.

彼女はその問題の本を探っているんだ。

(Kanojo wa sono mondai no moto o sagutte irun da.)

Translation: She is looking into the root of that problem.

リーダーシップは信頼の本だよね。

(Riidaashippu wa shinrai no moto da yo ne.)

Translation: Leadership is the foundation of trust, right?

... Read moreHey fellow language learners! So, you're diving into the fascinating world of Japanese kanji, and 本 (Hon/Moto) has popped up, right? I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed when I first encountered this one because it has different readings and meanings. But trust me, once you get the hang of it, it's super useful! One thing that really helped me solidify my understanding was grasping the stroke order. The digital dictionary entry mentioned 本 has 5 strokes, and knowing the correct way to write them isn't just for looking neat – it actually helps with memorization and recognizing the kanji faster. For 本, it generally goes: first the vertical stroke on the left, then the horizontal line at the top, followed by the middle vertical stroke that pierces through, and finally the two shorter horizontal strokes at the bottom. Practicing this a few times really makes a difference! Speaking of memorization, a trick I found helpful for distinguishing 'Hon' and 'Moto' was thinking about their origins. 'Hon' often relates to tangible things like 'books' (本) – something you hold. While 'Moto' leans more towards an abstract 'origin' or 'source,' like the root of a plant or the foundation of an idea. It’s like moto (origin) is the root of the plant, and hon (book) is something you read from the plant (tree pulp). Maybe a bit silly, but it worked for me! The article already gave some great examples, but let's dive into a few more common phrases where you'll see 本. For 'Hon' (book/origin): 日本 (Nihon/Nippon): Japan. Literally 'sun origin' – the origin of the sun. See how 'origin' comes into play there? This one blew my mind when I first learned it! 本当に (hontou ni): Really? / Truly. This is super common in daily conversations. 'Hon' here implies 'truth' or 'genuineness.' 本屋さん (hon-ya-san): Bookstore. Combining 'Hon' with 'ya' (shop) and 'san' (polite suffix). And for 'Moto' (origin/source/base): 元 (moto): This is actually the same kanji, but often written differently when it specifically means 'origin' or 'former' (e.g., 元彼 - moto kare - ex-boyfriend). While 本 (moto) emphasizes the 'root' or 'foundation,' 元 (moto) can also mean 'original' or 'former.' It can get a bit tricky, but don't worry too much about the nuances right now if you're just starting out! The key is understanding that both point to a beginning or base. 本物 (honmono): Real thing, genuine article. Here, 'moto' combines with 'hon' (truth) to mean 'genuinely original.' Learning 本 is a fundamental step as it's part of the JLPT N5 curriculum. This means it's one of the first 100 or so kanji you'll encounter, and mastering it will really boost your confidence for more complex kanji later on. Don't be afraid to make flashcards or use apps to practice. The more you see it and use it, the more natural it becomes. Keep up the amazing work, you got this!
