Hang in there! Japanese is a Journey!

Hey Study Blossoms!

The Japanese learning journey can sometimes feel like progress is slow and you may feel you hit multiple plateaus. Waves of motivation and overwhelm are common. It's okay; remember, results stem from discipline, not just motivation. Discipline is the key to reaching your goals. Utilize motivation to begin and recall your purpose, then employ discipline to sustain momentum. Enjoy the Journey. Enjoy your progress and celebrate even the smallest milestones because they do matter.

I know I haven't been as active, but it's because I have been super busy and I can't wait to share some news with you guys next month!

So I'll leave you with this: Keep going Please! Hang in there! 頑張ってください!

... Read moreHey fellow Japanese learners! I totally get it – that feeling when progress seems to slow down, or you hit a plateau that just won't budge. It's in these moments that I find myself clinging to the powerful phrase, "Ganbatte Kudasai!" (がんばってください!). You might have heard it before, perhaps even seen it written as "頑張ってください!" (with kanji), but do you truly know the depth of its meaning? For a long time, I just thought it meant 'good luck.' But through my own studies and interactions, I learned it's so much more profound. "Ganbatte Kudasai!" literally translates to something like "please do your best" or "please persist." It's not about wishing someone good fortune; it's about acknowledging the effort they're putting in and encouraging them to continue giving their all, even when things are tough. It implies a recognition of struggle and a belief in one's ability to overcome it through sheer effort. I remember one particularly challenging week when I was struggling to grasp a new grammar point. I felt so frustrated, ready to give up. My language exchange partner noticed my slump and simply said, "Ganbatte kudasai!" It wasn't just words; it was a warm reminder that my efforts were seen and valued, and that it was okay to struggle as long as I kept trying. That simple phrase reignited my motivation and helped me push through. It truly encouraged me to embrace the vulnerability of learning and keep going. Understanding the hiragana for "Ganbatte Kudasai" (がんばってください) is also super helpful, especially when you're starting out and kanji can be daunting. While you'll often see it in kanji (頑張ってください) in more formal or official contexts, the hiragana version is just as common and easy to recognize. Knowing both helps you navigate different texts and conversations. This phrase has become a cornerstone of my discipline. When I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself of its meaning. It helps me recall my purpose for learning Japanese and fuels my commitment to consistent practice, even on days when motivation is low. It's a reminder that every small step, every moment of perseverance, is a victory in itself. So, next time you feel like you're stuck, or even just need a little boost, remember to tell yourself, "Ganbatte Kudasai!" You're doing great, and your journey is worthwhile!
