Making Music (with little to no budget $)

Here are some FREE ways to start making music!

-

My name is Devon, and I am a self-taught independent musician that has been producing/recording music for about 6-7 years now.

In this post I share 2 of my favorite (& FREE) go-to apps that I’ve used over the years to create music. Although I am now very blessed to have a much better recording studio, these apps still come in handy.

-

For iPhone users, GarageBand is an amazing tool for creating music and is what I personally started off with on an iPhone 7+.

Additionally, we have Bandlab which is also another amazing and FREE app to start creating music.

Both of these apps offer hundreds if not thousands of royalty-free samples that you can utilize to find and craft your sounds.

-

If producing isn’t really your thing and you are more of a lyricist, Beastars is an amazing platform that connects you with hundreds of thousands of producers, giving you a massive source of different style beats to find your sound.

-

I’ll go more in to detail for distributing your music amongst major streaming platforms in another post, but I figured I’d at least share what I use.

-

I hope this post finds you well and gives some guidance to those who desire to make music.

-

Follow for more music tips + new releases, and thank you! 🦋

... Read moreSo, you're ready to dive into music creation but worried about the cost? Trust me, I've been there! When I first started, the idea of needing expensive gear or software felt like a huge barrier. But the truth is, the landscape for independent artists has totally changed. It's incredibly empowering how much you can achieve with little to no budget, right from your phone or computer. Beyond GarageBand and BandLab, which are fantastic tools, there's a whole world of possibilities. For instance, if you're on Android or want more advanced desktop features, exploring free Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Audacity or even free trials of professional software can be a game-changer. These might have a steeper learning curve than your mobile apps, but they offer incredible flexibility. I remember spending hours just experimenting with different effects and virtual instruments, piecing together sounds. It's truly amazing what you can create when you just start playing around. Once you have some tracks ready, the next big step is getting your music heard. This is where platforms like UnitedMasters and ReverbNation become invaluable for independent artists. I've personally found that services like UnitedMasters make the distribution process incredibly smooth. Their app interface is very user-friendly, guiding you through uploading your tracks, cover art, and metadata to all the major streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and TikTok. It takes away a lot of the headache of navigating individual platform requirements, allowing you to focus on what you do best – making music. ReverbNation, on the other hand, is fantastic for building your network and getting performance opportunities. I've seen many artists use it not just for distribution but also for connecting with venues, promoters, and even other musicians. It’s a great way to showcase your music, build an electronic press kit, and find gigs. Building a presence on these platforms is crucial for any artist looking to expand their reach without a huge marketing budget. Speaking of budget, let's talk about sounds. The original article mentioned royalty-free samples, and that's a goldmine! Beyond what's built into apps like BandLab, there are tons of websites offering free sample packs. I've spent countless hours sifting through these, looking for unique drum loops, synth melodies, or atmospheric textures to spark new ideas. This is where the concept of 'free improvisation' really comes into play – you're improvising with sounds that cost you nothing, building unique compositions. Don't be afraid to record your own sounds too! A simple phone recording of a rainstorm or tapping on a glass can become the perfect texture in your track. Networking is another key aspect that doesn't cost money. While BeatStars is great for finding producers or beats, platforms like RepostExchange (as seen in the OCR) can help you get your music heard by a wider audience through collaborations and reposts. Engaging with other artists on social media, joining online communities, and offering genuine support can open doors you never expected. Ultimately, the most important thing, as the image in this post reminds us, is to have fun! Don't get bogged down by perfectionism early on. Just create, experiment, and enjoy the process. The tools are more accessible than ever, so there's truly nothing stopping you from bringing your musical ideas to life, no matter your budget.
