Wedding expenses nobody warns you about 😭 save this before making a budget

... Read morePlanning a wedding often feels like navigating a maze of expenses, many of which are easy to overlook until the bill arrives. One of the biggest surprises that many couples face is the addition of service fees and gratuities, especially with venues and catering. These can tack on an extra 20-30% or more, turning a seemingly affordable $5,000 package into $6,000-$7,000 unexpectedly. It’s crucial to clarify these charges upfront to avoid budget shock. Another major cost often underestimated is wedding dress alterations. Depending on the complexity of the changes, alterations can range from $200 to $800, and sometimes even more for intricate designs or multiple fittings. Scheduling these in advance and requesting quotes from your tailor can help manage this expense. Postage for invitations is another sneaky cost. Heavy or bulky invitations require additional postage, which can easily add $80 to $300 or more to your mailing expenses. A great way to mitigate this is by opting for lighter materials or digital RSVP options where possible. Don’t forget about guestbook setup, which is increasingly digital. Services that allow guests to leave voice messages or scan QR codes to send wishes can range in price. Some start free for a few guests but may cost up to $99 for larger groups. These modern touches are a lovely way to capture memories but should be accounted for in the budget. Vendor meals are an important but often forgotten cost. Photographers, DJs, planners, and other staff usually expect a meal, costing between $15 and $50 per person. It’s wise to include these in your catering headcount or budget separately. Lastly, marriage licenses vary by state but typically cost between $30 and $100. While comparatively small, it’s a mandatory legal fee that must be planned for. From my own wedding planning experience, keeping a detailed list of potential hidden expenses and regularly updating your budget helped avoid last-minute financial stress. Communicating openly with vendors about all possible fees and reading contracts carefully can save you from unpleasant surprises. With these tips, you can approach your wedding budget with confidence and enjoy your special day without worry.

As a tailor/alteration specialist, wedding dresses have so many layers, bonings, and constructions that we must charge for our services! A dress can easily take 2-5 months to alter, depending on its "skeleton" 😩
