Making a Jacket Vest out of a Jersey
The vest Is slowly coming together!
Intro To Soul pattern
You know that feeling when you have an old favorite jersey – maybe one tied to so many memories – but you don't really wear it anymore? That's exactly how I felt about my dark blue NFL Cowboys jersey, the one with the iconic number 54. It was too special to just sit in the closet, and I wanted to give it a new lease on life. That's where my latest DIY project began: transforming it into a stylish, wearable vest! The idea of a 'desain rompi' (vest design) had been swirling in my mind for a while, especially for upcycling projects. I love the challenge of taking something old and making it new, unique, and fashionable. For this Cowboys jersey, I envisioned a relaxed-fit vest that I could layer over hoodies or t-shirts. My first step was laying out the jersey and carefully considering the cut. I started with the 'Intro To Soul pattern' as a basic guide, adapting it to fit the specific dimensions and details of the jersey. This pattern gave me a great starting point for the armholes and general shape, but I wanted to keep the original hem and some of the collar detailing to maintain that authentic jersey feel. Using tailor's chalk, I meticulously drew my cut lines directly onto the fabric. This part is crucial for any DIY clothing project – measure twice, cut once! I used an array of bright pink clips to hold the layers of fabric together as I prepared for the sewing machine, ensuring everything stayed perfectly aligned. Cutting through the thick, somewhat stretchy jersey material required a sharp rotary cutter and a steady hand. It's not just about snipping away; it's about carefully 'cutting and modifying' to preserve the key elements like the team logo and the number 54, making them central to the new vest design. Now, about the question 'how much is it worth'? For me, the value of this custom NFL Cowboys vest goes far beyond money. Of course, the material cost was minimal since I was using an existing jersey. The real 'worth' comes from the sentimental value of keeping a piece of my fandom alive in a new form. It's also about the satisfaction of creating something with my own hands. Think about it: a brand new, custom-designed vest like this, especially one with a favorite team's history, would likely cost a pretty penny if you were to commission it. By doing it myself, I'm getting a high-quality, unique item that perfectly fits my style, all for the cost of my time and a few basic sewing supplies. Plus, it's a fantastic way to be more sustainable by upcycling existing garments. It's truly rewarding to see the vest slowly coming together, transforming from a simple jersey into a completely new garment. If you have an old jersey gathering dust, I highly recommend trying an upcycling project like this. Not only will you end up with a distinctive piece, but you'll also gain a ton of satisfaction from the creative process. What do you think of this jersey transformation? Have you ever upcycled a sports jersey?
