Calling Disciples

2025/1/24 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! I've been diving deep into what it truly means to be a disciple of Jesus lately, and it's been such a transformative journey. The original post briefly touches on denying ourselves, but the Bible verses in the images really brought so much more depth to it. It's more than just saying 'I believe'; it's about a complete lifestyle shift, a daily walk. One of the first things that stood out to me from the scriptures is the call to 'deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.' This isn't about being gloomy or suffering needlessly. For me, denying myself means letting go of my own desires, ego, and comfort when they clash with God's will. It's about choosing His path, even when it's challenging. Taking up my cross daily feels like committing to serve, to love, and to sacrifice in small ways every single day, just as Jesus did. It’s a constant surrender, reminding myself that a disciple is not above his teacher. Then there's the powerful message about love. John 14:27 reminds us of the peace Jesus leaves us, but also that we are known by our love for one another. That new commandment to love one another, just as He loved us, is foundational. I've found that actively showing love – through kindness, forgiveness, patience, and encouraging others (like Hebrews 10:25 suggests) – is one of the most practical ways to prove I'm His disciple. It’s not always easy, especially when people are difficult, but that's where the challenge and the growth truly happen. It's about building each other up, just as 'iron sharpens iron' from Proverbs 27:17. The idea of 'bearing fruit' also resonated strongly. Jesus said, 'By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.' What kind of fruit? I believe it's the fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. It’s also about reaching out and making new disciples, baptizing them and teaching them all that Jesus commanded, as mentioned in the Great Commission. It’s a beautiful cycle of receiving, growing, and then giving back. And how do we do all this? The Holy Spirit is our Helper! The verses remind us that He will teach us all things and bring to remembrance what Jesus said. I've personally experienced moments where the Holy Spirit has guided me, given me wisdom, or brought a scripture to mind exactly when I needed it. It’s a constant source of strength and comfort on this journey. Finally, the concept of being 'born again' to see the kingdom of God is crucial. It’s not just a religious phrase, but a spiritual transformation, a fresh start. It’s about letting the truth set you free, as John 14:27 implies, and continually abiding in His word. This journey of discipleship is profound, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. It means renouncing all that we have, not necessarily giving up all possessions, but holding them loosely, prioritizing God above all, even family as some verses suggest, which can be tough to understand without context of putting God first. I hope this deeper dive encourages you on your own discipleship path. What aspects of following Jesus resonate most with you?
