Oh my goodness, I completely understand the feeling of dread when summer starts to fade! Those vibrant moments with butterflies fluttering around are truly magical, and I’m just like you – I cherish every single one. Seeing these beautiful creatures, like the orange butterfly with black markings or the elegant yellow and black swallowtail, just makes my garden feel alive. We get so lucky here to witness them dancing around the bright pink and red zinnia flowers! It’s not just about their beauty, though; there’s something incredibly special about attracting these delicate visitors to your own space. If you’re like me and want to keep these "Butterflies In the garden" around for longer, or even invite more, it really starts with the right plants. Zinnias, as you can see from my photos, are an absolute magnet for them! Their bright colors and flat landing pads make them perfect for butterflies to perch and sip nectar. I've noticed the dark butterflies with iridescent blue on their hindwings particularly love the deeper red zinnias. Beyond zinnias, there are so many other wonderful flowers you can plant. Think about varieties like coneflowers, milkweed (a must for monarchs!), verbena, and even simple marigolds. The key is to choose native plants whenever possible, as butterflies are naturally adapted to them. Also, remember both nectar plants for adults to feed on and host plants for caterpillars to munch on. A garden with just nectar plants is like a restaurant without a hotel – they'll visit, but they won't stay! I've learned a few tricks over the years to make my garden a true butterfly haven. First, sunlight is crucial. Butterflies love basking in the sun to warm their wings, so make sure your butterfly garden gets at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Second, consider a shallow water source, like a bird bath with some pebbles or sand in it, for them to "puddle." They extract minerals from the damp soil. And try to avoid pesticides, of course! Even organic ones can harm them. It's been such a joy watching different species arrive. I’ve been lucky enough to see not just the stunning orange butterflies, but also several yellow and black swallowtail butterflies, sometimes two on one flower, as well as those darker, more mysterious ones with the incredible iridescent blue flashes as they fly. Each type has its own charm, and observing their distinct patterns and behaviors is a delightful pastime. Whether it's a vibrant swallowtail with open wings on a pink zinnia or a darker one with orange spots feeding on a red zinnia, every sighting is a gift. To truly enjoy these moments, I often grab my camera and try to capture their beauty. It's amazing how still they can be when they're focused on feeding. Just remember to be patient and move slowly. Creating a quiet, undisturbed corner in your garden where they feel safe will also encourage them to linger. So, as we head towards the end of summer, let's not just be sad about missing them.
