Tell me why I lost my kid, my phone, and my mind

Tell me why I lost my kid, my phone, and my mind in Walmart.”

So boom.

I walk into Walmart already knowing I shouldn’t be there. My spirit said Target, my bank account said ma’am, be serious. I had my hair done, nails fresh, eyebrows arched with intention. I was feeling cute enough to make bad decisions.

First stop: the bathroom. Because Walmart requires a ritual bathroom visit whether you need to go or not.

I sit down in the stall and immediately hear this woman in the stall next to me having the most dramatic conversation of her life.

She goes,

“I just don’t know what to do anymore.”

Without thinking, I say,

“Girl… same.”

Silence.

Then she says,

“He won’t even answer the phone.”

I go,

“Because men are emotionally ill.”

She sighs heavy.

“I mean, am I wrong for feeling this way?”

I say,

“No. Trust your intuition. And also—he’s lying.”

At this point I’m fully invested. I’m nodding. I’m giving therapist energy. I’m even whispering “mmhmm” like I’m getting paid per response.

Then she goes,

“Hold on, I gotta finish this text.”

And I realize…

She’s not talking to me.

She’s on the phone.

Bluetooth.

AirPods.

Technology betrayed me.

I sit there frozen like, So how long have I been talking to myself?

I clear my throat. She flushes. Leaves. No goodbye. No thank you. No acknowledgment of the emotional labor I just gave her for FREE.

I walk out like nothing happened because confidence is pretending it was on purpose.

Now I grab my cart and my kids are with me. Oldest daughter walking like she pays bills. My little one—three years old at the time—doing laps like she’s training for a toddler Olympics.

I sit my phone down on a shelf to grab something real quick.

Mistake number one.

Next thing I know… my three-year-old is gone.

Just gone.

Vanished.

I stop.

Blink.

Scan.

My heart drops into my stomach and does a cartwheel.

Now I’m whisper-yelling,

“Baby… BABY… don’t play with me.”

No answer.

Now I’m speed-walking, pushing the cart like I’m in Fast & Furious: Walmart Drift. I’m checking aisles, peeking around endcaps, asking strangers like,

“Have you seen a tiny human? About this tall? Cute but stressful?”

Then it hits me.

My phone.

I don’t have my phone.

So now I’ve lost:

✔️ a child

✔️ a phone

✔️ my dignity

I’m sweating. My edges are lifting. My nails are still cute but my soul is tired.

I finally find my little one chilling in the cart like she’s been there the whole time, eating snacks she did NOT pay for, looking at me like “Why you panicking?”

I grab her up. Crisis number one handled.

Phone still missing.

At this point I’m talking to myself out loud like,

“Okay. Okay. Nobody panic. We’re fine. Everything is fine.”

I finish shopping because at this point I’ve already committed. We’re in too deep.

Checkout time.

I ring up my stuff. A LOT of stuff. Like… a suspicious amount of stuff.

The screen flashes.

An employee comes over with that tone.

She says,

“Ma’am… the system says you stole or missed ringing up 109 items.”

ONE.

HUNDRED.

NINE.

I gasp like they accused me of grand theft auto.

I say,

“First of all—109 is aggressive. Second of all—if I was gonna steal, this would NOT be my selection.”

They start checking everything.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

Turns out…

I rang up everything.

Perfectly.

I’m embarrassed. Irritated. Mentally drafting my apology speech while also plotting revenge against the self-checkout machine.

Then—because Walmart never misses a chance to add chaos—a big greasy lady bumps into me HARD.

Like, shoulder check.

I turn slowly and give her the look of death. The kind that says “I am tired, I am cute, and I have nothing to lose.”

She goes,

“You wanna fight?”

I look at her, look at my nails, my hair, my outfit, and say,

“Honestly? Sure. Who cares.”

But then I pause and say,

“Wait… before we fight—what do you do for work?”

She’s confused.

She says, “Cleaning.”

I say,

“Oh. Same. Actually—what kind?”

Now we’re talking business.

Next thing you know, I’ve talked my way out of a fight and into a cleaning job lead. Because that’s who I am. Opportunistic. Resilient. Slightly unhinged.

The manager overhears us talking prices.

A cop overhears us talking prices.

They both come over like,

“Wait… how much do you charge?”

Now I’m giving a TED Talk in aisle 12 about square footage, hourly rates, and why my work is worth it.

Cop nodding.

Manager impressed.

Greasy lady suddenly respectful.

I leave Walmart with:

✔️ both kids

✔️ my phone (which was in the car the WHOLE TIME)

✔️ no criminal record

✔️ potential new clients

✔️ and a story nobody would believe if it didn’t actually happen.

I sit in the car, deep sigh, and say to myself:

“Walmart really tried me today… and lost.”

Moral of the story?

Never talk to strangers in bathroom stalls.

Never trust self-checkout.

And always keep your phone… and your kids… in sight.

Because life be lifing.

And sometimes the chaos still clocks out with a win.

... Read moreShopping with kids can be an adventure full of unexpected twists, especially when balancing your attention between little ones and everyday errands. From personal experience, securing your children's safety in busy stores like Walmart requires constant vigilance. Leaving your phone unattended, even briefly, can lead to moments of panic as I learned firsthand. Combining that with the chaos of self-checkout machines, which can falsely accuse shoppers of missed items, makes for a recipe of added stress and embarrassment. One tip I found helpful is to establish a mental checklist before entering the store: phone on your person, children in sight, and a clear shopping plan. Using child harnesses or wrist links can provide extra security for toddlers who tend to wander, giving parents peace of mind. Also, it’s beneficial to have a designated 'meeting spot' in the store in case anyone gets separated. Interestingly, social interactions in such chaotic moments can take surprising turns. For example, what started as a dubious shoulder bump escalated into a business networking opportunity in cleaning services, proving that even stressful situations might bring unexpected positives. Lastly, never underestimate the importance of humor and resilience. Despite the streaks of frustration and near panic, keeping a lighthearted attitude can help get through these tough parenting moments smoothly. Life’s unpredictable, but sometimes the chaos has a silver lining that makes it all worthwhile.

Love is the one thing I will always give freely, no matter how many times my heart breaks. There’s a saying: It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. Imagine loving someone so freely, so fiercely, so loudly, so purely—and imagine them loving you back. What a beautiful gif
