What I’ve Grown in my Garden

Outside of cooking, I love gardening! My home is covered in house plants and I used to have a very small produce garden 😊

I’ve been gardening since elementary school. I love being outside and I find gardening to be an incredibly spiritual experience (even when it doesn’t always work out lol). These are a few of the things I’ve grown in the past. Right now I’m working on growing jalapeños for the first time! 🌶️

I hope to get back into growing more produce so I can use them in some of my recipes.

Have you ever gardened? What do you grow?

... Read moreStepping into the world of gardening has always been a deeply rewarding experience for me. It’s more than just growing plants; it's about connecting with nature, learning patience, and enjoying the fruits (and vegetables!) of your labor. If you're wondering what to plant in your own 'my garden' space or just curious about different plants, here’s a look at some of my favorites and what I've learned along the way. For beginners, or anyone looking for an easy win, I always recommend starting with basil. I’ve had success growing huge, lush basil plants that truly brightened up my kitchen and my cooking. It's incredibly forgiving and grows quickly, rewarding you with fresh herbs for your dishes in no time. Just give it plenty of sun and water, and you'll be amazed at how fast it thrives. You can start it from seed or buy small seedlings, and before you know it, you’ll have fragrant leaves ready for pesto, pasta, or salads. Another absolute joy to grow are strawberries. There’s nothing quite like plucking a ripe, juicy strawberry right from your own plant. I've grown them almost every year, and it’s an experience I highly recommend. They need a sunny spot and consistent moisture. Watching those tiny green berries swell and blush red is incredibly satisfying, especially when you consider how much better they taste than store-bought ones. Plus, they’re perfect for containers if you have limited space. For those who love a plant with both beauty and purpose, Aloe Vera is a fantastic choice. Not only is it a striking succulent, but its gel has wonderful soothing properties for skin irritations. What’s even better is how easily it propagates. You’ll often find little 'babies' growing around the base of the main plant, which you can gently separate and repot to create new plants or share with friends. It’s a gift that keeps on giving! Beyond edible plants, houseplants also bring so much life and greenery indoors. If you're looking to bring some of that 'my garden' feeling inside, varieties like Pothos are incredibly resilient and beautiful with their trailing vines. For something a bit more unique, a Bear Paw succulent (Cotyledon tomentosa) with its fuzzy, paw-shaped leaves, adds a whimsical touch. These are generally low-maintenance, needing good light and infrequent watering, making them perfect for busy schedules. Of course, not every gardening endeavor is a smashing success, and that’s perfectly okay! I’ve had my share of learning experiences. Take carrots, for instance. I once grew what I affectionately called “The World's Skinniest Carrot.” It was a testament to the fact that some plants require very specific soil conditions and care. Similarly, I've grown beets that, while visually appealing, weren't quite to my taste – even though the process was fun. These experiences teach you about soil depth, consistency, and what produce truly suits your palate. And then there are long-term projects; watching a small pine tree sapling grow taller than me over the years has been a humbling reminder of nature's power and slow, steady progress. Gardening, whether it’s a small pot on a windowsill or a sprawling backyard patch, offers endless opportunities for learning, relaxation, and joy. Don't be afraid to experiment, learn from your plants (and your mistakes!), and enjoy the incredible journey of nurturing life.
