The Abbey Yung Method Product Comparison Guide Series Part 6.1: Bond Repair Treatments!

This category is trickier to compare than others because many of the technologies in these treatments are patented, and the exact way that they work is often not fully disclosed by the brand. On top of that, there’s no single agreed upon definition for “bond repair” treatments.

So to try to make this as comprehensive and fair as possible, I wanted to split this into two videos. This first video is meant to provide a high level overview of the different types of repair these treatments claim to provide. The next video will compare important product characteristics like formula, weight, product format, application, and price to help you make a decision on which one (or ones) make the most sense for you to use.

Stay tuned for video 2!

... Read moreOkay, so you're searching for bond repair treatments – and let's be real, the world of hair science can feel like a maze! I know I've spent countless hours trying to figure out if these products are just marketing hype or if they genuinely make a difference. It's tough when brands have patented technologies and don't always spill all the secrets about how their formulas work. But after diving deep, I've realized that understanding the types of bonds in your hair is the first step to choosing the right treatment. Our hair isn't just one type of bond; it's a complex structure held together by three main types: disulfide, ionic, and hydrogen bonds. Think of them as the tiny scaffolding that gives your hair its strength, elasticity, and shine. When these bonds get damaged – whether from bleaching, heat styling, chemical services, or even just daily wear and tear – your hair becomes brittle, weak, and prone to breakage. That's where these amazing bond repair treatments come in, but they don't all work the same way. For instance, the K18Peptide™ technology in K18 products is designed to repair hair at a molecular level, specifically targeting polypeptide chains and disulfide bonds. It's about reconnecting those broken keratin chains to reverse damage. My experience has shown that focusing on these core structural bonds can bring back a lot of life to extremely compromised hair. Then there's the Living Proof Triple Bond Complex, which boasts a 3D Fortifying Technology. This is super interesting because it claims to rebuild all three types of bonds – hydrogen, ionic, and even create new covalent bonds (which include disulfide bonds). Imagine a 3D network being created within your hair's keratin structure, making it 8 times stronger and more manageable. This holistic approach is really appealing for overall damage and even protection against future styling stresses. Another player, like the L'Oreal EverPure Bond Repair system, uses a combination of Citric Acid + 7% Bonding Care Complex to rebuild weak ionic bonds within the hair's cortex. They also incorporate fiberHance™ bm solution, a small molecule that penetrates deep into the cortex to create new hydrogen and ionic bonds. From what I've seen, this can significantly improve strengthening and manageability, especially for hair that’s been put through a lot of chemical treatments. So, how do you choose? It really comes down to the type of damage you have and what your hair needs most. If your hair feels mushy or severely broken from chemical processes, a treatment like K18 that focuses on core molecular repair might be your best bet. If you're looking for comprehensive strengthening against various types of damage and want improved resilience, Living Proof's approach could be fantastic. And for those dealing with breakage and seeking to reinforce the internal structure, especially after color treatments, the L'Oreal system offers targeted ionic and hydrogen bond repair. Ultimately, understanding these different mechanisms is key to finding the product that will truly bring your hair back to life!
