I found this state park in CT on our trip and I was not expecting what I seen. When I heard castle I imagined some rubble and plaques but it’s still standing. It has a rich history, an old railway, and tons of Sherlock memorabilia. They were sold out of tickets to tour the castle so we had to just admire from the outside. I would 100% recommend stopping here. The lily pad pond and bridge is located near the entrance of the park. We spend so much time sitting on the end of the pond looking for frogs. 💚
... Read moreI totally get it – when you hear 'castle' in Connecticut, you might picture ruins, but Gillette Castle State Park completely blew my expectations away! My first visit left me wanting more, and I've since gathered some extra tips to make your trip even better, especially if you're planning a visit to this unique Connecticut attraction.
First off, let's talk about getting there and timing. Gillette Castle is nestled in East Haddam, CT, and it’s a scenic drive no matter which direction you come from. The park itself is quite popular, so if you're hoping to tour inside the grand, stone castle, securing Gillette Castle State Park tickets in advance is absolutely crucial. Trust me on this – I learned the hard way when they were sold out! Check their official state park website for operating hours and to book your guided tour tickets online, especially during peak seasons like fall foliage or summer weekends. Arriving early in the day is also a great strategy to beat the crowds, even if you're just exploring the grounds.
Now, about the castle itself. It’s not just any old castle; it was the eccentric home of William Gillette, a renowned actor famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. This explains all the Sherlock memorabilia and unique architectural elements you'll find! The castle, with its incredible stonework and quirky design (like hidden passages and custom-built furniture), truly reflects his personality. Even if you only admire the multi-story structure from the outside, like I did, you can appreciate the craftsmanship and imagine the stories within. The park offers fascinating insights into his life and legacy, making it a rich historical experience.
But the magic doesn't stop at the castle walls! The surrounding Gillette Castle State Park grounds are equally stunning. Remember that serene lily pad pond I mentioned? It's even more beautiful up close, perfect for snapping some peaceful photos or just sitting by the water, trying to spot frogs and other wildlife. There are also miles of well-maintained hiking trails that wind through the woods, offering breathtaking views of the Connecticut River. You'll even find remnants of Gillette's miniature railway system – a fascinating piece of history for train enthusiasts!
Visiting in Gillette Castle winter is a completely different experience. While some facilities might have limited hours, the snow-covered grounds and the majestic castle create a truly picturesque scene for Gillette Castle photos. Just be sure to dress warmly and check the park's winter operating schedule. Regardless of the season, wear comfortable shoes, as there's plenty of walking, and bring a camera – you'll want to capture every angle of this incredible place, from the rustic stone archway at the entrance to the detailed castle façade.
Overall, Gillette Castle State Park is a definite Connecticut attraction that offers something for everyone, whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or just looking for a unique day trip. It's truly a testament to one man's vision and an unforgettable stop!
