What you should be teaching your 12-15 month old!

Knowing what to teach your baby can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re unsure of what’s considered normal or if you’re doing enough. I recently saw a post from a pediatric OT with some excellent tips on what to focus on with your toddler at this stage, and wanted to share the info!

Stacking one block tall – At this age, your baby should be able to stack one block on top of another.

Shape sorter– Work on guiding them to place simple shapes, like a circle, in the correct holes of a shape sorter.

Ring stackers – By now, baby should be learning to put the rings back on the stacker, instead of just taking them off.

Board books – Your toddler should be able to turn the pages of a board book (even if they need some help separating them) and start pointing at pictures.

Drumming – Introduce activities like banging on a drum, pot, or pan with a wooden spoon.

Early scribbling – By 12-15 months, baby should be able to hold a crayon (or other writing utensil) and make a mark on a piece of paper.

Introducing a ball – If you haven’t already introduced a ball, this is a great time to do it! Baby can learn to roll, throw, and attempt to kick a ball.

Baby doll– A doll is a great toy to begin teaching body parts, even though they won’t fully recognize them until closer to 15-18 months.

Just a reminder that every child is different, and that’s OK! Some may do these things sooner than others, and some may do them later. But of course, if you’re worried about anything, talk to your pediatrician! Much love🤍

... Read moreNavigating the 12-15 month stage with your little one is such an exciting time! They're growing so fast, and it's natural to wonder if you're doing enough to support their development. I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed, trying to figure out the best ways to engage my toddler while also keeping an eye on those big milestones like walking and talking. While walking and talking grab a lot of our attention, there are so many other wonderful things to teach your 12-15 month old that build crucial foundations. Let's dive deeper into some practical tips for those developmental activities: Making Play Interactive and Engaging: Stacking One Block Tall: This might seem simple, but it's a huge step for fine motor skills and problem-solving! Instead of just showing them, try building a stack yourself and then gently knocking it over, making it a game. Encourage them to try, even if they just place one block on top for a second. Celebrate every tiny success – a clap and a cheer go a long way! Shape Sorters & Ring Stackers: These are fantastic for hand-eye coordination and cognitive development. For shape sorters, start with just one or two shapes, like the circle, and guide their hand if needed. Narrate what you’re doing: "Round circle goes in the round hole!" For ring stackers, focus on the action of putting the rings on the pole. They might still enjoy taking them off, and that's okay! It's all about exploration. You can even talk about colors as they play. Board Books & Pointing: Oh, the joy of reading with your little one! Beyond just turning pages (which is a skill in itself!), make reading interactive. Point to pictures and name them: "Look, a doggie! Woof woof!" Encourage your toddler to point with you. This simple act of pointing at pictures in board books is a huge leap in language development and understanding. Drumming with Household Items: Who needs fancy instruments when you have pots and a wooden spoon? Let them bang away! This is a wonderful sensory activity that teaches cause and effect and develops rhythm. Join in the fun, making different sounds with various objects. It's a fantastic indoor activity for 1 year old energy! Early Scribbling: Grab some chunky crayons and a large piece of paper. Don't expect masterpieces! The goal here is to help them hold a crayon and make a mark. This develops their grip and fine motor control, essential pre-writing skills. It’s about the process, not the product. Introducing a Ball: Rolling, throwing, and even attempting to kick a ball are great for gross motor skills, balance, and coordination. These are all building blocks for more confident walking and running. Start with a soft, lightweight ball and sit on the floor, rolling it back and forth. Make it playful and fun! Baby Doll Play: A baby doll is more than just a toy; it's a tool for social-emotional learning and language. You can start naming body parts on the doll – "Where's dolly's nose?" This helps them learn about their own body parts and expands their vocabulary. It's also a gentle introduction to empathetic play. Creating an Engaging Environment: Remember, your home is their biggest classroom. Focus on creating a safe, stimulating space where they can explore freely. Rotate toys to keep things fresh, and most importantly, be present. Your engagement and positive reinforcement are the best tools you have. Every child develops at their own pace, so enjoy these precious moments and celebrate every tiny step forward!
