This is my second book by Shanora Williams, and yeah… she might have me hooked. 👀
This story follows Rose, a journalist who gets a call from a friend whose sister has gone missing. At first, Rose isn’t exactly eager to get involved because of a traumatic accident from her past. But the deeper she digs into the case, the more secrets she uncovers, leading her to a mysterious lake where nothing is quite what it seems.
Eve, the missing woman, had a heartbreaking upbringing, and I honestly think her past played a huge role in the choices she made as an adult. As for Rose, there were moments when I wanted her to open up more, but considering everything she’d been through, I understood why she kept her guard up.
Now let’s talk about that plot twist… because WHAT?! 🤯 I did not see it coming. This book had me locked in from the very first chapter to the last. No dragging, no unnecessary filler—just a well-paced, suspenseful story that kept me entertained the entire time.

The story revolves around Rose, whose investigative journey reveals how past traumas and personal histories can profoundly influence present actions. The mysterious lake setting adds an eerie charm that keeps the tension high throughout the book.
What stood out for me was how the author balanced Rose's emotional struggles with the unfolding mystery, lending authenticity to her cautious nature and reluctance to dive in. It’s refreshing to see a protagonist who feels real in her vulnerabilities rather than just being a typical detective archetype.
The character of Eve, whose disappearance triggers the story, is portrayed with such nuance that you can't help but empathize with her difficult upbringing and understand the motivations behind her adult choices. This psychological depth enriched the reading experience and fostered a strong emotional connection.
Shanora Williams’ ability to pace the narrative is commendable—there are no moments of drag or unnecessary filler. Each chapter builds suspense steadily until the explosive plot twist that took me completely by surprise. It’s rare to find thrillers that keep you guessing without predictable clichés, and this book ticks that box perfectly.
For anyone intrigued by mysteries that intertwine human emotion, past trauma, and suspenseful plotting, 'Whisper of the Lake' comes highly recommended. It’s the kind of book that once started, you won’t want to put down until the last page. Adding it to your TBR is a no-brainer if you’re a fan of smart, engaging thrillers with depth.
