I randomly picked up When Forty Blooms by Jancita Howard while trying to use one of my Hoopla credits, and WOW… this was the mature Black romance I didn’t know I needed.
I did the immersive read with Wesleigh Siobhan narrating, and she absolutely elevated the experience.
Simone is turning 40 on February 29—a Leap Year birthday—and is two years divorced from Jackson. They share a 16-year-old son and have figured out how to co-parent without the drama. But when old feelings turn into new intimacy, they quickly realize that chemistry isn’t enough when unhealed wounds are still in the room.
What I loved most is that this wasn’t just a romance. It was about what childhood trauma can do to your relationships, how divorce doesn’t always end love, and how healing sometimes means taking an honest look at yourself before asking someone else to love you again.
This book gave me:
✨ Mature love
✨ Emotional depth
✨ Second chances
✨ Therapy and healing
✨ Self-reflection
✨ Characters who actually communicate and grow
I finished this feeling full. It was emotional without being overly dramatic, romantic without feeling unrealistic, and a beautiful reminder that it’s never too late to bloom.
If Before I Let Go is one of your favorite romances, add When Forty Blooms to your TBR immediately.
🌸 1000/10. New author unlocked, and I’ll definitely be reading more from Jancita Howard.

Simone's story, with her unique Leap Year birthday and co-parenting journey, resonates with anyone who's experienced love's ups and downs beyond the honeymoon phase.
One aspect I deeply appreciated was how the novel dealt with unhealed wounds from childhood trauma and its impact on adult relationships. This isn’t just a predictable romance; it thoughtfully explores emotional scars and the courage needed to confront them. It reminded me of how crucial self-reflection and therapy can be in rebuilding love — something that isn’t often highlighted authentically in romance stories.
Listening to Wesleigh Siobhan’s narration added another layer; her voice brought the characters’ emotions to life, enhancing the immersive experience. It reinforced that audiobook narrators can truly elevate a story, especially one filled with nuanced feelings and growth.
If you, like me, have enjoyed 'Before I Let Go' for its mature themes and emotional depth, 'When Forty Blooms' is an excellent follow-up. It offers a narrative about second chances that feels genuine — no rushed reconciliations but rather a patient exploration of what it takes to heal and love again. The characters communicate openly, which felt refreshingly realistic and inspiring.
This book also made me appreciate how stories about Black mature love provide representation that isn’t always seen in mainstream romance. It celebrates growth and healing at every stage of life, proving it’s never too late to bloom. Overall, I found it a fulfilling read that left me hopeful and emotionally touched—definitely a 10/10 recommendation for anyone looking for a rich, heartfelt romance.
