I’m telling you, there is NO WAY I read Flyy Girl in the early 2000s because WHY did Tracy and her entire family piss me off like this?! 😩📚

Tracy at 6 was A LOT. But I didn’t think she was grown—I just felt like this girl had SO MANY questions. 😂 As she got older, though? Baby… it got worse.

Tracy’s dad felt like he settled down too early but still wanted to control everything while her mom was paying all the bills. And Tracy’s mother? She treated Tracy like her GIRLFRIEND instead of her daughter. Tracy was doing WAY too much, especially for a girl who was only 13–15 years old.

Then there’s Mercedes. Tracy absolutely idolized her, while Mercedes’ sister was doing everything she could NOT to become like her sister. 👀

And let me just say this: after reading about Raven in Moth to a Flame and Brooklyn in Brooklyn, I’m starting to realize these authors really know how to create some TEENAGERS who will have you questioning everybody’s parenting skills. 😂😂

I honestly can’t even give Flyy Girl a rating because I was irritated for most of the book. 😩 BUT—I still enjoyed the read!

And being from Philadelphia, I really enjoyed that it was set in Philly, especially the Germantown area. That part definitely made it feel more personal and familiar.

Now there are TWO more books in this series, and I’m really debating whether I want to continue. I feel like Book 1 wrapped things up well enough…

BUT I NEED TO KNOW IF TRACY EVER BECAME A BETTER PERSON. 😭

Because at this point, I don’t know if I want character development or if I just need somebody to tell Tracy, “Girl… SIT DOWN.” 😂

... Read moreReading Flyy Girl brought back vivid memories of my own teen years, especially growing up in a city with a strong sense of community like Philadelphia. The depiction of Germantown not only adds authenticity but also grounds Tracy’s experiences in a relatable setting. From my perspective, stories like these capture what it's like to navigate adolescence when family dynamics are less than perfect. I’ve also noticed that characters like Tracy, who are both frustrating and intriguing, often reflect the confusion many teens face when balancing respect for parents with their own growth. Tracy’s dad’s feeling of having settled down too early and exerting control seemed very realistic to me. I have seen similar situations where parents try to maintain authority while coping with their own regrets or challenges, which in turn affects the teenagers’ behavior. Meanwhile, Tracy’s mother blurring the lines between friendship and parenting reminded me of how some parents attempt to be 'cool' but may inadvertently add pressure or confusion to their child’s upbringing. The idolization of Mercedes contrasted with her sister’s rejection of that lifestyle felt like a classic sibling dynamic that adds layers to family stories. It brought to mind times when I’ve seen siblings react very differently to family expectations — it’s a compelling theme that keeps readers wondering what lessons are learned and if characters mature. Although Tracy was irritating, as the original review pointed out, it was that very imperfection that made the story feel genuine. Books like Flyy Girl, along with Moth to a Flame and Brooklyn, highlight how authors adeptly create teen characters who challenge norms and prompt readers to reassess their own ideas about parenting, responsibility, and growth. Regarding the prospect of continuing the series, I can relate to the hesitation when a first book wraps up well but leaves key character arcs unresolved. There’s a natural curiosity to see if Tracy transforms, especially since teenage years are a prime time for change and self-discovery. Personally, I hope the sequels delve deeper into Tracy’s development while keeping the authentic family tensions alive, as that juxtaposition makes the narrative so engaging. Also, the fact that Flyy Girl is soon to become a major motion picture adds another layer of interest, demonstrating the story’s lasting impact and cultural relevance. It’s exciting to see stories rooted in specific communities like Philly getting wider recognition, and it might be the perfect opportunity for both new and returning readers to revisit the series.
