How often should I retwist my locs?

2024/12/10 Edited to

... Read moreOne of the most common questions I hear, and certainly one I asked myself when I first started my loc journey, is "How often should I retwist my locs?" It’s a question that doesn't have a single, one-size-fits-all answer, because so much depends on your hair type, loc age, lifestyle, and even the look you’re going for. But don't worry, I'm here to share my experience and tips to help you figure out what works best for you and your beautiful locs. When I first got my locs, I was obsessed with achieving that perfectly neat, fresh retwist look. I thought the tighter and more frequent, the better! So, I was getting my locs retwisted every 3-4 weeks. While they looked super sharp initially, I soon started noticing some issues. My scalp felt constantly tender, and I even saw a bit of thinning around my temples. That’s when I realized I might be retwisting too often and too tightly. It was a tough lesson, but it taught me the importance of listening to my hair and scalp. So, what factors should you consider when deciding on your retwist frequency? Loc Age: If your locs are still new and budding (usually the first 6-12 months), more frequent retwists (every 4-6 weeks) might be necessary to help them mature and prevent unraveling. However, once your locs are fully mature and locked, you can definitely space out your retwists more. Hair Texture & Growth Rate: Some hair types lock faster and hold retwists longer than others. If you have very soft or fine hair, you might find yourself needing a retwist a little sooner. Also, if your hair grows quickly, you’ll see new growth (frizz) sooner. Desired Look: Do you prefer a super neat, manicured look, or are you leaning towards a more freeform, organic style? People who love a pristine look might retwist more often, while those who embrace a more natural aesthetic might go longer between sessions. Lifestyle: If you’re very active, swim often, or wash your hair frequently, your retwists might not hold as long, potentially influencing your schedule. Based on my experience, and what many loc experts recommend, a good general guideline for mature locs is to retwist every 6-8 weeks, or even up to 10-12 weeks. This gives your new growth enough time to strengthen and integrate into the loc without putting excessive tension on your roots. For me, I've found that 6-8 weeks is my sweet spot. It allows me to maintain a relatively neat look without over-manipulating my hair. Going longer sometimes means more frizz, but it also gives my scalp a much-needed break. My top tips for maintaining healthy locs between retwists: Moisturize! This is crucial. I like to use a light leave-in conditioner or a rosewater spray daily to keep my locs and scalp hydrated. Protect your locs at night. Sleeping with a satin bonnet or pillowcase reduces friction and frizz, helping your retwist last longer. Be gentle. Avoid excessive pulling or styling that puts strain on your roots, especially as your new growth comes in. Don't over-manipulate. Resist the urge to constantly twist or play with your locs, as this can lead to frizz and breakage. Ultimately, figuring out "how often should you get your locs retwisted" is a personal journey. Pay attention to how your scalp feels, observe your new growth, and most importantly, listen to your hair. Your locs will tell you what they need! Experiment a little, and you’ll find the perfect rhythm that keeps your locs strong, healthy, and beautiful.
