Healthy Locs • Color Edition 🌹💦

I always knew once I decided to loc my hair I would eventually dye them, especially the color red. Many would advise against dying your locks due to hair damage, like breakage and dryness and other things. However, I believe those things can happen to your hair if you choose to dye it and don’t take the necessary steps to take care of it without having locs.

These simple things help me keep my color vibrant, hair healthy, and edges in tact. At the end of the day the best thing you can do for your locs is listen to them.

• Hydrate your locs

• Oil your scalp

• Low manipulation

I’m thinking about doing a little deep dive into how I get/maintain my color what you think?

... Read moreHey everyone! So, as you know, I absolutely adore my vibrant red locs and shared some of my core maintenance tips. But I know many of you are curious about keeping any colored locs healthy, whether you're dreaming of teal green locs, warm ginger colored microlocs, or even classic blonde. The truth is, the foundation for beautiful, healthy colored locs is similar, no matter the shade! Let's dive a little deeper into those crucial steps I mentioned, especially since achieving those eye-catching red locs hairstyle looks depends on a strong, healthy base. First, Hydration is Your Locs' Best Friend. My original article touched on this, but let's get specific! I swear by a routine that includes regular misting with water or a light leave-in conditioner spray. Think of it like giving your locs a refreshing drink throughout the day, especially if they feel dry. Occasionally, I'll even pamper them with a steam treatment – yes, like for your face, but for your hair! Steaming really helps open up the cuticles and allows moisture to penetrate deeply, keeping those strands supple and preventing brittleness, which is crucial for colored hair. Dryness is the enemy of vibrancy and strength, so don't skip this! Next up, Oil is your FRIEND – and I can't stress this enough. It's not just about making your scalp feel good; it's about locking in that precious moisture. I apply a light oil blend to my scalp and down the length of my locs after hydrating. This step acts as a powerful sealant, preventing moisture from escaping, which is especially important for colored hair that can be more porous. It also helps to nourish the hair from root to tip, promoting softness and a healthy sheen. You’ll notice your color looks even more vibrant when your locs are well-oiled and moisturized. Finally, Low Manipulation is key for longevity and health. I know it's tempting to constantly restyle, but less is often more. For my locs, this means a low retwist rate. I try to extend the time between retwists as much as possible to avoid unnecessary tension on my roots. When I do style, I opt for gentle options like scrunches, which are super easy and put minimal stress on the locs. And if you're rocking locs with beads or other accessories, make sure they aren't pulling too tightly on your hair. Minimal pulling, whether from styling, sleeping, or even just day-to-day habits, makes a huge difference in preventing breakage and thinning, especially around your edges. Even for chic short loc styles, gentle handling during washing and styling is paramount to keep them strong and thriving. Remember, whether you have a vibrant head of red, a cool teal, or subtle ginger, listening to your locs and giving them consistent, gentle care is the ultimate secret to keeping them healthy, strong, and your color absolutely popping!
