My honest review of Variation! While I really expected to love this one it just wasnât my favorite by her! I had a really hard time connecting with the characters & getting into the story! I did enjoy the book hence the 3âī¸ but it didnât leave any impact feeling on me and thatâs okay not every book will be a 5 star read!
... Read moreWe all know that feeling, right? You pick up a book, especially one by a #1 New York Times bestselling author like Rebecca Yarros, with high hopes, ready to dive into a new world. Sometimes, though, a book just doesn't quite click, and that's perfectly okay! My recent read, 'Variation,' definitely falls into that category for me. It wasn't a DNF (Did Not Finish) by any means, but it also didn't give me that undeniable 5-star buzz.
So, what makes a book a solid 3-star read instead of a glowing 5-star masterpiece? For me, it often comes down to connection. With 'Variation,' I found myself struggling to truly invest in the characters. Have you ever read a novel where the protagonists feel a bit distant, or their motivations aren't quite clear enough to make you root for them wholeheartedly? That's what happened here. I kept waiting for that moment where I'd feel completely immersed in their journey, but it never quite arrived. It's not that they were unlikeable, but rather, I just couldn't forge that strong emotional bond that makes a story unforgettable.
Beyond the characters, getting fully into the story proved to be a bit of a challenge too. Sometimes a plot takes a while to build, and that's fine, but I felt like the narrative pacing in 'Variation' didn't quite grab me from the start. I love a book that makes me forget I'm reading, pulling me completely into its world, but this one required a bit more effort on my part to stay engaged. Perhaps it was the specific elements of the setting or the unfolding events, but it just didn't create that magnetic pull I often look for in a captivating story.
Now, a 3-star rating doesn't mean it's a bad book! It means there were definitely enjoyable aspects. The writing itself was still good, and the premise had potential. It just didn't leave a lasting impact on me, which is a key differentiator between a good read and a truly memorable one. As a fan of Rebecca Yarros's other works, it was interesting to see this side of her writing, and it just goes to show that even a prolific and talented author will have books that resonate differently with each reader.
My advice if you're considering picking up 'Variation'? Go in with an open mind! If you enjoy a straightforward romance novel and don't require an intense emotional connection to every character, you might find more to love. Sometimes what one reader finds a minor hurdle, another might not even notice. Ultimately, reading is such a personal experience, and my 3-star rating is just my honest take. It's a reminder that not every book has to be a life-changing experience; sometimes, a decent, enjoyable read is exactly what you need.
I love the Fourth Wing series by her and Iâve also read The Last Letter but I havenât read any of her other books! What other ones would you recommend? đ
