Grocery Trip
Grocery shopping with a preschooler is never quick, but it’s actually one of my favorite little routines.
Teddy loves helping pick everything out, and lately we’ve been working on word recognition while we shop, so every aisle turns into a mini lesson. It definitely makes the trip take longer, but I wouldn’t trade it.
Between choosing snacks, pointing out letters, and deciding what’s going on the menu this week, it ends up feeling less like a chore and more like something we get to do together.

Taking grocery shopping beyond just picking up essentials can be a rewarding experience, especially when you involve your little ones. From my own experience, bringing a preschooler like Teddy into the store turns a routine trip into a special opportunity for learning and connection. One effective way to enhance this experience is by focusing on word recognition. Pointing out familiar words on packaging, such as "BEANS," "EGGS," or "TORTILLAS," not only helps build vocabulary but also encourages early reading skills. Including your child in decision-making, like picking snacks or planning meals, empowers them and introduces concepts of choice and responsibility. It can also spark interesting conversations about healthy eating and flavors they like. Sometimes, carrying a mini checklist or a simple game, such as finding items beginning with a certain letter, adds an educational twist that keeps little minds engaged. While these activities may extend the trip’s duration, they transform mundane chores into moments full of joy and learning. Additionally, the snippets seen on packaging during the trip, such as "CAGE FREE," "SOFT TACO," and price tags like "$7.47," can serve as practical examples to discuss topics like animal welfare, meal preparation, and basic money concepts. The key is to balance patience with an open mindset, recognizing that these outings are about more than just shopping—they’re about creating everyday moments that build your child’s skills and deepen your bond.
