That first week home with a newborn is brutal. Here’s 3 things I underestimated and how you can be ready.

Having gone through the first week at home with my newborn, I can say it truly feels like stepping into the unknown. The first night especially is something no one fully prepares you for—you’re exhausted, scared, and unsure if you're doing anything right. What caught me off guard was how much emotional support my partner needed even when she said she was okay. Her hormones were fluctuating wildly, she was recovering, and breastfeeding was a whole new skill she was trying to master. I learned the importance of checking in regularly with real, intentional questions instead of assuming everything was fine just because she said so. Another thing that surprised me was the shift in our relationship dynamic. Suddenly, the bond we had felt different—not weaker, but altered because all our focus went towards caring for the newborn and managing zero sleep. Instead of letting that create distance, we made it a point to stay connected intentionally, whether through short talks or small gestures of appreciation. It reminded me that being a parent is a team effort and that relationship care needs to remain a priority. If you’re preparing for this journey, know this: it’s okay to feel overwhelmed and unsure. But with awareness of these challenges—tough first night, supporting a recovering partner, and nurturing your relationship—you can navigate that initial week with more confidence. Take it one step at a time, check in often, and remember, you’re both learning something entirely new together.
