Finding animal bones in nature is always such a profound experience for me. There's a raw beauty in the cycle of life and death, and seeing these weathered remains truly makes you pause and reflect. Like the ones I shared, often when I stumble upon such discoveries, my first thought is always, 'What animal was this?' It's a natural curiosity, isn't it? Identifying bones can be a real puzzle, especially when they've been exposed to the elements for a long time, just like these from a couple of years ago. From what I remember and what the images show, we're looking at a pretty complete set of skeletal remains, including a distinct rib cage and spine, and even what looks like a possible antler in one of the shots. This immediately makes me think of larger mammals, and the presence of an antler strongly points towards a deer, perhaps a buck. Deer bones are quite common finds in many natural settings because they're widespread, and the shedding of antlers is a yearly occurrence for male deer. When you're trying to figure out 'what kind of animal is this' from bones, here are a few things I've learned to look for: Size and Shape: Is it tiny like a bird, or large like a deer? The overall size of the bones can narrow down the possibilities significantly. The bones I found seemed quite substantial. Specific Features: Skulls, teeth, and antlers are huge clues. Different animals have unique dental patterns and skull structures. While I didn't get a clear skull shot, that antler is a big giveaway for ruminants like deer. Bone Structure: Look at the joints, the thickness of the bones, and any distinguishing processes. A rib cage, for example, can give an indication of the animal's overall body size and shape. The spine is also very telling, with the size of the vertebrae varying greatly between species. Location: Where did you find the bones? Knowing the local wildlife can help you deduce what animals are likely to be in the area. Condition: How weathered are they? Are they scattered or articulated? The natural decomposition process leaves its own marks, affecting how easy it is to identify. It's truly amazing how nature reclaims everything, showcasing the intricate details of decomposition in the wild. While it's fun to play detective, it's also important to remember to appreciate these finds respectfully. Generally, it's best to leave bones where you found them, allowing nature's cycle to continue.
