The skin in the jaw, chin, and lower cheek areas is more sensitive to androgens, which increase sebum production and clog pores, creating the ideal conditions for acne. Even if your hormone tests appear normal, your skin can still be reacting strongly to these hormone signals. One of the most helpful approaches I’ve found is addressing the root cause by lowering the effect of androgens on the skin. This can be done through a combination of lifestyle and medical interventions. Diet plays a surprisingly key role: reducing high glycemic foods, cutting down on sugars that spike insulin, and increasing protein and fiber intake help improve insulin sensitivity, which in turn can balance androgen levels. Exercise has also been valuable—not just for general health, but because it helps regulate insulin and cortisol, hormones that indirectly affect androgen activity. Consistent sleep and managing stress through mindfulness or simple routines further support hormone balance. I’ve also noticed that avoiding hidden androgen triggers like whey protein supplements or certain progestins has made a difference in how my skin behaves. For some, topical treatments like Clascoterone (Winlevi), which block androgens locally in the skin, or oral medications such as spironolactone, have been game changers by directly reducing oil production and androgen effects. If you suspect underlying conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), it’s important to consult a healthcare professional since hormonal treatments like combined oral contraceptives with anti-androgenic properties can be effective. The key takeaway from my skin journey is that you don’t necessarily have to lower your systemic hormones but rather focus on reducing how androgens affect your skin. Combining lifestyle modifications with targeted medical treatments often leads to significant improvements in jawline acne and helps restore your skin’s natural glow.
