National adopted a turkey month

Did you know it's National Adopt a Turkey Month? Who wouldn't want this adorable turkey roaming around their house? He doesn't eat much and he makes no messes! This is the perfect time of year to make your own turkey. Just get a big nut for the body, a smaller nut for the head, and a leaf for the tail. The neck is optional! No legs? No problem - just make him look like he is sitting! I would LOVE to see what others could create. If you happen to make one... post a picture in the comments, please!

Artist's Note: This Tom Turkey is made from: Small acorn (head), Horse Chestnut (Body), Birch Sticks (neck and legs), and a dried Japanese Maple leaf.

... Read moreNational Adopt a Turkey Month is a delightful and unique annual observance that encourages people to create and 'adopt' their own turkey crafts instead of the traditional live bird. This movement promotes creativity and offers a playful alternative suited for families, classrooms, and craft enthusiasts alike. Creating a turkey craft using natural materials is both environmentally friendly and a wonderful way to connect with nature during the fall season. Collecting items such as acorns, horse chestnuts, birch sticks, and colorful leaves not only supports sustainable crafting but also inspires imagination and appreciation for the outdoors. The beauty of this craft lies in its simplicity and flexibility. For example, the body of the turkey can be made from a large nut like a horse chestnut, while a smaller acorn can serve as the head. Birch sticks provide excellent details for the neck and legs, and dried leaves, especially vibrant Japanese Maple leaves, make perfect tail feathers. Don’t worry if you lack certain materials or accessories like legs; shaping your turkey to appear sitting or in any imaginative pose adds to the charm. This hands-on project encourages participation of all ages and skill levels. Children can develop fine motor skills and creativity, while adults can appreciate the therapeutic nature of crafting. Sharing your creations online or in local communities promotes social connection and spreads the joy of this whimsical art form. Additionally, National Adopt a Turkey Month aligns with broader cultural movements toward ethical treatment of animals and awareness around Thanksgiving traditions. By embracing handmade symbolic turkeys, people celebrate the season compassionately and creatively. If you decide to participate, consider sharing photos of your turkey craft on social media platforms using hashtags like #whimsicalart, #acornwhimsy, #adoptaturkey, #turkeyday, and #petturkey. It’s a wonderful way to inspire others and be part of a growing community that values art, nature, and kindness. Whether as a fun family activity, a school project, or a seasonal decoration idea, adopting a turkey through crafting is a heartwarming way to celebrate the season thoughtfully and inventively.
