artmaking is standard human behavior!

2025/7/26 Edited to

... Read moreIt’s truly fascinating to think about how deeply ingrained artmaking is within us, isn't it? When I first started exploring this, I realized that far from being a 'weird' or specialized activity, art is a basic human activity – a core part of the human experience that ties us all together. Just like the earliest humans who left their mark with incredible cave paintings over 40,000 years ago in places like Lubang Jeriji Saléh on the island of Borneo, we too are driven by an innate urge to create. It’s not strange to do so; in fact, I'd argue it’s completely normal. So, why do societies need art and creativity to survive? Think about it: art isn't just decoration. It's a powerful tool for communication, helping us tell stories, preserve history, and understand our world. Through art, societies pass down knowledge, rituals, and values from one generation to the next. It fosters a sense of community and shared identity, bringing people together through common experiences and expressions. The role of art in society is monumental – it challenges norms, sparks dialogue, and even provides comfort or inspiration when we need it most. Art also gives us the freedom of expression, allowing us to process emotions and ideas in unique ways. Artmaking itself encompasses such a diverse range of creative activities and skills. When you think of art, what comes to mind? Is it painting, drawing, sculpture, music, dance, writing, or even cooking? All these are expressions of our creativity. Creativity, by the way, is often linked with traits like imagination and problem-solving. These aren't just for 'artists'; they're essential for navigating life! Humans have been making artwork since the dawn of time because it helps us make sense of our surroundings and even innovate. One thing I've observed is how naturally children engage in art. Give a child some crayons or playdough, and they instinctively start creating. This truly highlights that making art is a very normal human activity, not something reserved for a select few. It's about bringing inner thoughts and feelings into a tangible form, whether it’s a simple doodle or a complex masterpiece. It reminds me of the saying, 'one man's trash is another man's treasure' – showing how subjective and personal art can be. For me, art has always played a vital role in my life. It’s a way to reflect, to learn, and sometimes just to enjoy beauty. It's about making meaningful art, which doesn't necessarily mean gallery-worthy pieces, but rather work that resonates with you or others. What types of art do you enjoy? How does art and creativity play a role in your life? Whether you're actively creating or simply appreciating, engaging with art connects you to a fundamental part of what it means to be human.

The image introduces 'Normal Toddler Behavior That Society Calls "Bad"', explaining that a toddler's brain is still building. It features a crying emoji and tags for ages 1-4, child development, and real talk.
This slide addresses tantrums, noting that while people call them 'dramatic,' they are actually due to an undeveloped prefrontal cortex, meaning toddlers cannot regulate big emotions. Tantrums peak between ages 1-3.
This image explains that a toddler saying "NO" to everything is not defiance, but their first act of identity, discovering they are a separate person. It emphasizes autonomy as healthy development.
Normal Toddler Behavior That Society Calls “Bad”
Your toddler isn’t bad. Their brain is just still under construction. 🧠🧡 Save this for the next time someone judges your kid (or you judge yourself). Every “difficult” behavior on this list is rooted in normal, healthy development, science backed, not an excuse. You’re not failing. You’r
