PREMENSTRUAL DYSPHORIC DISORDER💐🫧🫂🪽

Living with chronic PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) is an ongoing battle that impacts my mental health significantly. Each month, I brace myself for the emotional and psychological storm that PMDD brings. The symptoms often begin during the luteal phase of my menstrual cycle and can be overwhelming. I experience intense mood swings, irritability, and feelings of hopelessness that can make even the simplest tasks feel insurmountable. This cyclical nature of PMDD means that just as I start to feel a sense of normalcy, the symptoms return, creating a relentless cycle of emotional turmoil.

Mentally, PMDD takes a substantial toll on me. The severe anxiety and depression that accompany it are not just fleeting moments of sadness; they are profound and persistent feelings that can dominate my thoughts and actions. The irritability and anger can strain my relationships, making it difficult for those around me to understand what I am going through. There are days when I feel completely disconnected from myself, as if my mind is a battleground of conflicting emotions and thoughts. This mental strain can lead to a sense of isolation, as I find it challenging to explain the depth of my struggles to others who may not fully comprehend the intensity of PMDD.

The impact of chronic PMDD on my mental health is far-reaching. It affects my ability to function at work, maintain social connections, and engage in activities that I once enjoyed. The fear of the next episode looms over me, making it difficult to plan for the future or feel a sense of stability. Despite my efforts to manage the symptoms through various treatments and lifestyle changes, the unpredictability of PMDD makes it a constant challenge. It's a relentless cycle that demands resilience and strength, as I navigate the highs and lows that come with living with this condition. If any of you also struggle with pmdd, my messages are always open🩷

... Read morePremenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome that affects approximately 3-8% of menstruating women. Understanding PMDD is crucial for recognizing its symptoms, which can include major mood shifts, anxiety, and extreme irritability during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. These symptoms offer a glimpse into the emotional turmoil faced by those who experience PMDD. Living with PMDD can profoundly impact daily functioning. Women often find that managing their mental health becomes a priority as they navigate their menstrual cycles. Treatment options may include lifestyle adjustments, therapy, and sometimes medication to provide relief. Mindfulness practices, regular physical activity, and proper nutritional support can also play a vital role in managing symptoms. A supportive environment is essential; whether it's through online communities or local support groups, sharing experiences can foster understanding and relief. If you're seeking to learn more about PMDD, numerous resources are available, including educational websites and forums where individuals can share their stories and coping mechanisms. Opening up about feelings of isolation or confusion can help dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health challenges associated with PMDD. Remember, seeking help and connecting with others is a powerful step toward managing the challenges of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.

The cover of Amadeus Quarterly Issue N° 08, titled "PMDD vs PMS," discusses when hormonal mood changes become disabling. It highlights that 5-8% of menstruating women meet PMDD criteria, but most are undiagnosed. It serves as a diagnostic feature.
Page 2, titled "The Distinction," explains that many women with PMDD are misdiagnosed with PMS, leading to a 12-year average delay in correct diagnosis. It emphasizes that PMS is uncomfortable, while PMDD is disabling, urging readers to consider if their experience is more than "just PMS."
Page 3, "Severity," compares PMS as mild to moderate and manageable, versus PMDD as severe, extreme, and functionally disabling, causing missed work, relationship issues, and suicidal ideation. It states PMDD is a distinct psychiatric disorder, not a worse PMS.
PMDD vs. PMS
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder is not a severe form of PMS. It is a distinct psychiatric condition affecting five to eight percent of menstruating women, caused by an abnormal brain sensitivity to allopregnanolone — a metabolite of progesterone that interacts with GABA receptors. In PMDD, hormone
