My OC in a Victorian dress

Creating an original character (OC) is always a journey, but diving into a specific historical period like the Victorian era adds so many layers of fun and challenge! When I decided to design my very own Victorian OC, I knew it wasn't going to be a quick sketch – and boy, did it take forever, as I mentioned before! But every moment spent on research and detail was absolutely worth it. First, I had to immerse myself in Victorian fashion. It’s not just about pretty dresses; it’s about understanding the silhouette, the undergarments (hello, corsets and crinolines!), the fabrics, and the accessories. Did you know the ideal silhouette changed quite a bit throughout the Victorian era? Early Victorian fashion (1837-1860) often featured wide, bell-shaped skirts supported by crinolines, while mid-Victorian (1860-1870) saw the rise of the bustle, pushing volume to the back. Late Victorian (1870-1901) brought more tailored looks, often with a focus on a slender front and a dramatic bustle or train at the back. Deciding which sub-era my OC belonged to was crucial for her overall look and personality. Beyond just the clothing, I thought about the social context. Was my OC from a wealthy family, allowing for opulent silks, lace, and elaborate embroidery? Or was she from a more modest background, wearing practical woolens and simple cottons? The choice of fabric, the complexity of her hairstyle, and even the type of jewelry (or lack thereof) all tell a story about her place in society. For my OC, I imagined her as someone with a keen eye for detail, perhaps from a family with a comfortable income, allowing for a certain elegance without being overly extravagant. Then came the accessories! Gloves, hats (oh, the hats!), parasols, fans, delicate boots, and tiny purses. These weren't just decorative; they were essential elements of Victorian etiquette and daily life. A lady would rarely be seen outside without a hat and gloves. These small touches really bring an OC to life and make them feel authentic to their time period. Crafting a Victorian OC is more than just drawing a pretty outfit; it's about building a character whose very appearance reflects the rich history and societal norms of the era. The effort involved in researching and meticulously designing each element is what makes the final creation so rewarding. It truly felt like I was bringing a piece of history to life through my art, and I couldn't be happier with the result after all that hard work!
