mistakes I won’t let you make on a trip to Europe

After traveling 10+ countries myself, and working with a lot of first time Europe travelers, I’ve come to learn a few things I think can have a huuuge impact on your trip, and I’m not one to sugar coat, so without further ado, the top 5 travel mistakes I’ll always help you avoid

1. TRYING TO SEE TOO MUCH IN ONE TRIP

Packing 5 cities into 10 days means you're constantly on the go, and probably exhausted by day 5. When you rush around, you miss the café on the side street, getting to try the local’s recommendation, the view you’d fall in love with. Tight checklists leave no room for the moments that actually make trips memorable. Slow down and experience places, don't just check them off.

2. PLANNING AROUND WHAT EVERYONE SAYS IS A “MUST DO”

Just because it’s is all over Instagram doesn't mean it's right for you..like spending a day of your time in Amalfi Coast to see Pompeii when you’re more of a beach gal than a history buff(take a trip to Ischia instead!). That "must stay" hotel might be too formal, too party-focused, or too minimal when you want charm. Your trip should reflect YOUR travel style, not what gets the most likes.

3. PENNY PINCHING IN WAYS THAT COST YOU EXPERIENCE & ADD STRESS

A bad hotel location and quality will taint your experience - it’s not worth the €50 saved a night. And if you’re not public transport savvy and adaptable - trying to navigate the buses may put you on edge. Sometimes splurging on convenience and your “wishlist” items (the nicer hotel, the private transport, the balcony room) IS the luxury that lets you fulllly enjoy your trip.

4. NOT EMBRACING BEING A TRAVELER

If you don’t try to immerse in the culture of where you’re visiting, you’re missing out on truly experiencing it! At least TRY a local dish - even if it’s unfamiliar feeling. Try the neighborhood trattoria instead of the trendy tourist spot. Embrace it when you get a little lost, and learn how to roll with the nuance of travel(like delays and bad weather). Step into local rhythm and let the destination surprise you - you’ll learn a lot a lot and become better from it.

5. NOT CHOOSING YOUR TIMING WISELY

"Euro summer" = intense heat, massive crowds, and peak prices. If that sounds like your personal nightmare, consider going in the shoulder seasons (March-May and September-November) for great weather and fewer tourists. But also - think about what you actually want: love the winter and dream of skiing the Dolomites? Winter. Lavender fields in Provence ? Late June. The "right" time depends on *your* priorities.

... Read moreTraveling across Europe can be an incredible experience, but making smart choices before and during your trip can truly make a difference. One of the biggest mistakes is trying to pack too many destinations into a short time. Slowing down and spending more time in each place lets you connect with local culture and uncover hidden gems like quaint cafés or lesser-known viewpoints that guidebooks overlook. When planning your trip, it’s important to avoid following generic "must-do" lists blindly. Just because a tourist hotspot is popular on social media, like the Amalfi Coast or Pompeii, doesn’t mean it suits your personal interests. If you prefer beaches over historical ruins, exploring places like Ischia can offer a more relaxing and enjoyable experience. Your accommodations should also align with your travel style—whether that’s seeking cozy charm or vibrant nightlife. While budgeting is essential, pinching pennies on critical aspects such as hotel location or transport convenience can backfire. A centrally located hotel might cost more but will save you time and reduce stress, giving you more energy to enjoy your days. Investing in private transfers or balcony rooms can add comfort and make your trip feel special. Embracing the traveler mindset involves diving into local customs and cuisine. Ditching tourist traps for neighborhood eateries can lead to authentic dining experiences. Navigating small challenges like unpredictable delays and weather enriches your journey and helps you adapt, making your trip more rewarding. Finally, timing your visit thoughtfully is key. Europe’s high season in summer brings heat, crowds, and increased prices—often overwhelming first-timers. Opting for shoulder seasons like spring or fall offers pleasant weather and smaller crowds. If winter sports or seasonal sights like lavender fields in Provence appeal to you, plan accordingly. Ultimately, choosing the right time to visit depends on what you want to experience most. By steering clear of these common travel mistakes and personalizing your journey, you’ll create meaningful memories and enjoy Europe to its fullest.
