... Read moreIt's an unspoken truth for many of us: people-pleasing isn't just a habit; it's often a deeply ingrained pattern that can leave us feeling utterly drained and invisible. If you're constantly putting others' needs before your own, saying 'yes' when you desperately want to say 'no,' or feeling that familiar pang of anxiety when anticipating someone's disapproval, you're not alone. I remember those days well – feeling like a nervous people pleaser, always on edge, always trying to anticipate what others wanted from me. It was exhausting, and for a long time, I didn't understand why I kept doing it. Understanding the roots of people-pleasing was a game-changer for me on my journey to finally putting themselves first. So, what are some of the common causes behind this relentless need to please? One significant factor often stems from childhood experiences. Perhaps you grew up in an environment where love and approval felt conditional, only given when you were 'good,' compliant, or achieved certain things. This can lead to a deep-seated belief that your worth is tied to how much you do for others or how happy you make them. The fear of rejection or abandonment, even subtle, can powerfully shape this behavior. Another common cause is low self-esteem or a shaky sense of self-worth. When we don't fully value ourselves, we tend to seek external validation to feel good enough. Pleasing others becomes a way to earn that validation, to feel accepted, loved, or even just seen. It’s a temporary fix, though, because true self-worth comes from within, not from external applause. Fear of conflict and disapproval also plays a huge role. For many people pleasers, the thought of upsetting someone, disagreeing, or facing confrontation is deeply uncomfortable. We might go to great lengths to avoid these situations, even at our own expense, sacrificing our own needs and opinions to maintain peace or avoid perceived negative reactions. This often ties into an anxious attachment style, where there's an underlying fear of losing connection if we're not constantly accommodating. Recognizing these underlying causes isn't about blaming your past or yourself; it’s about gaining powerful self-awareness. It’s the first vital step towards breaking free from these patterns. Once you understand why you feel compelled to people-please, you can begin to consciously challenge those old beliefs and reactions. This insight empowers you to start setting those crucial boundaries, detaching from unhealthy dynamics, and finally giving yourself the permission to prioritize your own well-being. It's a journey, undoubtedly, but one that leads to reclaiming your energy, your voice, and your life. Remember, your healing glow-up is waiting for you to truly embrace it.

Men who are people-pleasers often have trouble making decisions. Because they fear conflict, they try to avoid staying their needs and ironically, usually end up hurting the other person so much more. They do by self-sabotaging. A subconscious way to force the other person to make the decision.
