What happened in Amarillo Texas?

#bucketlist #llemon8challenge

Went on a solo roadtrip from Arizona to Kansas. Spent most of my time in Oklahoma with family and then several more days with family in Kansas.

It would have been fun to have a buddy to go with but it was also a fun experience to do it solo!

I only had one scary incident and that was right outside of Amarillo Texas. I stopped for gas in the middle of the day, the gas station was open and a few cars were there. When I got out the only other person that was pumping gas was an older man with a U-Haul. He stared at me when I got out and just watched every move I made. When I made eye contact he acted like he was turning around. I kept an eye and awareness of my surroundings but continued pumping my gas. Then he ran (literally like a jogging motion into the actual store), but what creeped me out was when he got in the store and turned around and looked at me. And after he turned his back for a second when in the store. I got in my car and left.

I was not sticking around to see if anything else was gonna happen.

What is your favorite roadtrip you’ve been on? Would you roadtrip alone?Amarillo Kansas New Mexico Oklahoma City #travel #unfiltered

... Read moreIt's truly unsettling to read about experiences like this while on what should be an exciting solo road trip. That gut feeling, like the one described outside Amarillo, Texas, is your most important safety tool, and it's great that you listened to it. Solo travel, while incredibly liberating, also means you're solely responsible for your safety, making awareness even more crucial. Many of us dream of exploring the open road, seeing sights from New Mexico's enchanting landscapes to the vast plains of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. These journeys are often filled with beautiful scenery, unique roadside attractions like PistachioLand, and memorable moments with family. However, it's vital to prepare for potential safety challenges, especially when traveling alone. Here are a few tips I've picked up or learned from others for staying safe on solo road trips: Trust Your Instincts: This is paramount. If a person or situation feels off, it probably is. Like the experience at the gas station, it's always better to be overly cautious than to ignore warning signs. Choose Well-Lit, Busy Stops: When possible, opt for gas stations, rest stops, or diners that are well-populated and brightly lit, especially at night. A few cars, as mentioned, are better than none, but a bustling location offers more witnesses. Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Always scan the area before getting out of your car. Notice who is around, what they're doing, and if anyone seems to be paying undue attention to you. Keep your phone accessible. Keep Your Car Doors Locked: Even when pumping gas, keep your doors locked. Don't unlock them until you're ready to get back in. Plan Your Route and Share It: Let someone know your itinerary, including your planned stops and estimated arrival times. Check in regularly. Apps like Google Maps allow you to share your real-time location. Don't Share Too Much Information: Avoid discussing your travel plans or that you're traveling solo with strangers. Know Emergency Numbers and Services: Have local emergency numbers saved, and know how to contact roadside assistance if needed. Maintain Your Vehicle: Breakdowns in remote areas, especially across the expansive drives in states like Texas or Oklahoma, can put you in a vulnerable position. Stay Sober and Alert: Consuming alcohol or drugs while traveling solo can severely impair your judgment and reaction time, making you an easier target. While the iconic large white cross in Groom, Texas, or the welcoming signs of the Sunflower State in Kansas might offer a sense of peace, it's important to remember that safety is a constant consideration. Road trips are about freedom and discovery, but a little preparation and vigilance can ensure those memories remain positive. Stay safe out there!
