I Could Give You the Moon

I Could Give You the Moon by Ann Liang is an addictive "Fu Er Dai" (rich kid) romance that feels like a high-stakes, supernatural dream. The story follows Chanel Cao, a socialite who has spent her whole life keeping up a perfect image, and Ares Yin, a mysterious new student at her elite boarding school who is searching for his missing brother. After they share a magical vision of the future, seeing Chanel’s home burn down and Ares’s brother nearby, they realise they are the only ones who can help each other.

What I really liked was the sharp narration and the real emotional stakes behind the glitz. Ares is nonchalantly good, and the chemistry between him and Chanel is top-tier. Watching them finally stop making excuses and fall for each other is so satisfying. It was also such a treat to see Henry Li and Alice from If You Could See the Sun again, though I definitely wish we had more of them!

However, the pacing struggled to balance the magical elements with the grounded teen drama, and I found myself getting frustrated by some of the characters' questionable decisions. Still, if you want something atmospheric and full of that classic Ann Liang yearning, this is a total binge-read. It’s a great pick if you like YA school settings and a good slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers subplot!

... Read moreReading 'I Could Give You the Moon' feels like stepping into a vividly crafted world where the luxury and pressures of wealthy teen life collide with supernatural mysteries. What fascinated me most was how Ann Liang seamlessly blends the exquisite details of the Fu Er Dai culture—showcasing Chanel Cao’s life of privilege and expectation—with the suspense around Ares Yin’s quest to find his missing brother. Their shared vision of the future creates a compelling reason for their connection, adding layers beyond typical YA romance. As someone who enjoys rich, character-driven stories, I appreciated the sharp, evocative narration that didn’t shy away from exploring the emotional vulnerabilities behind the characters’ glamorous facades. The slow-burn romance between Chanel and Ares is nuanced and authentic, making their moments of hesitation and eventual surrender relatable. It echoes the irresistibly complex dynamics seen in other acclaimed YA novels with enemies-to-lovers themes. The novel also intrigued me with its supernatural elements—visions and premonitions that impact the plot tension and character decisions. While at times the pacing could feel uneven, especially when balancing magical aspects with more grounded drama, this interplay ultimately enriches the narrative by keeping readers guessing. Moreover, fans of Ann Liang’s previous work will enjoy the cameo of characters like Henry Li and Alice from 'If You Could See the Sun,' which adds a layered continuity for loyal readers. This intertextuality deepens the world-building and emotional investment. For readers looking to immerse themselves in an atmospheric YA school setting, combined with heartfelt romance and a dash of suspense, 'I Could Give You the Moon' is a binge-worthy pick that explores themes of identity, loyalty, and the burdens of expectations among the wealthy young elite. It's a story that lingers with you, much like the yearning that Ann Liang masterfully captures throughout her writing.
