DIY Autism incentives and reward chart!

My son has autism profile PDA so we do literally everything we can to neutralize anxiety and present tasks and demands in a positive and predictable format. These baggies are something I worked up for his teachers at school and they've been successful! #autismlifehack #parentingtips #cryptids #specialinterest

... Read moreI know how challenging it can be to navigate daily routines with an autistic child, especially when anxiety and demand avoidance are part of their profile, like my son's PDA. That's why discovering the power of personalized visual reward charts and incentive bags has been such a game-changer for our family, and for his teachers too! When I first started creating these, my goal was simple: to make tasks positive, predictable, and less overwhelming. And let me tell you, they really work! The core idea is to transform potentially stressful demands into something achievable with a clear, appealing outcome. For children on the spectrum, visual aids are incredibly effective because they provide clarity and reduce verbal overload. My son thrives on knowing what to expect, and these systems deliver just that. One of my favorite tools is our 'THIS THEN THIS' reward chart. It's so straightforward, but the impact is huge. Instead of a verbal instruction that might feel like a demand, it clearly lays out the sequence: 'First, this task (with a picture), then this reward (with another picture).' For instance, we might have 'First: finish your puzzle' (picture of a puzzle), 'Then: listen to your favorite song' (picture of headphones). You can grab some simple board or even a laminated sheet. The key is using clear, engaging images for both the task and the reward. I've found that incorporating actual photos of the items or activities makes it even more concrete. For example, if the reward is a specific crystal, I'll use a picture of that exact Dalmatian stone or moonstone crystal. It makes the reward feel real and attainable. Then there are the incentive baggies – these are where the magic of personalization truly shines! I use small, often sheer, drawstring bags, like the blue ones with gold stars and moons, or the gold ones. The transparency adds a little peek of what's inside, building anticipation. The secret to their success? Filling them with items directly related to my son's special interests. He's absolutely fascinated by cryptids, so his bags often contain miniature yeti figurines or a cool dark blue shark figurine. For another child, it might be small fidget toys, art supplies, or even a coupon for extra screen time. I’ve heard of parents using small clear quartz mushroom figurines for kids who love collecting rocks. The beauty of these bags is that the reward isn't a surprise; it's a known, desired item that motivates them through the task. Here are a few tips I've picked up along the way for making these systems work for your child: Involve Your Child: Whenever possible, let them help choose the rewards. This increases their buy-in and motivation. We often rotate items in the bags to keep things fresh. Keep it Positive: Focus on what they will get, not what they won't if they don't complete the task. Use encouraging language. Be Consistent: This is probably the most crucial part. Follow through every single time. Predictability builds trust and reinforces the system. Start Small: Don't overwhelm them with too many tasks or too big a reward initially. Build up gradually. Flexibility is Key: Some days are harder than others. If a reward isn't motivating anymore, or a task feels too big, be prepared to adjust. The goal is success, not rigid adherence. Fade When Ready: As your child internalizes expectations and routines, you might find you can slowly reduce the frequency of the chart or the number of tangible rewards, replacing them with praise or preferred activities. These DIY visual aids have not only helped manage anxiety and demand avoidance but have also fostered a sense of accomplishment and independence in my son. It's about empowering them to navigate their world more confidently, one predictable, rewarding step at a time.
