The impending arrival of each birthday often brings with it a heaviness associated with growing older. In creating 'A Celebration of Mortality,' I aimed to symbolize this conflict through my artwork. The melting candles in the piece represent the dual nature of birthdays—celebration intertwined with the bittersweet reality of time's relentless march. Each flickering flame is not just a marker of age, but a reminder of life’s fragility. Art has the unique ability to express complex emotions, and I want viewers to resonate with the vibrant yet unsettling representation of this experience. The blood and wax symbolize the struggle between joy and pain, illustrating the overwhelming paradox of aging. As we celebrate milestones, we simultaneously bear the weight of our past and future. I hope this piece evokes feelings of reflection and connection, inviting others to share in these common yet deeply personal emotions.
