Endgame by Willa Gray

“Isn’t that what partners do? Share the weight?”

Willa Gray, Endgame

What an amazing debut novel for Willa Gray! This book perfectly balanced heart warming romance with the emotional complexity that comes with grief. Ellie and Matt’s story is one that will make you laugh, cry, and cry wish for your very own walking green flag hockey player. The romance was sooooo good, anyone who reads this is bound to fall in love with Matt who is a prime example of the appeal of older men. The way this book portrays the grieving process as a fluid thing rather than something that simply gets better with time really adds the layer of emotional complexity that all books need, and goes to show just how important it is to have a true partner that will be there for you in all the good and bad moments, no matter how dark and ugly they get.

... Read moreHaving read Endgame by Willa Gray, I found the way it addresses grief through the lens of romance truly refreshing. Unlike many novels that depict grief as a linear ‘getting better with time’ process, this book shows it as fluid, unpredictable, and deeply personal. Ellie and Matt’s relationship unfolds with a naturalness that makes their struggles and triumphs feel authentic, especially as Matt is portrayed as a mature, supportive partner—his role as a 'walking green flag hockey player' really resonated with me. From personal experience, finding a partner who truly shares emotional burdens, as suggested in the quote “Isn’t that what partners do? Share the weight?”, is invaluable. It’s not just about being there for happy moments but standing strong through dark, challenging times. The book’s inclusion of a passion like hockey as Matt’s background adds a unique texture to their romance and highlights how shared interests can strengthen bonds. Additionally, the emotional complexity woven into the story reminded me how grief isn’t only sorrow but a host of feelings that come in waves. Having witnessed friends navigating loss, I've seen how a patient, understanding partner can make all the difference. This novel captures that delicate balance of vulnerability and strength beautifully. For readers interested in romance novels that go beyond surface-level love stories, Endgame offers a rich narrative that explores healing and connection. It’s no surprise that readers who appreciate heartfelt characters and authentic relationships will want to recommend this book over and over. If you enjoy stories where characters grow through love and hardship alike, this book is a gem that delivers both emotional depth and compelling romance.
