... Read moreAs a flight attendant, I've come to appreciate the unique advantage that short layovers and airport standbys offer. While some may see these brief stops—sometimes as short as 13 to 15 hours—as inconvenient or hardly worth it, in reality, they can be a smart way to earn additional income without significantly interrupting personal schedules. One key benefit I've found is how these short layovers often mean I get to rest at home or somewhere comfortable, rather than being stuck in an airport hotel for extended periods. This makes it easier to manage work-life balance, especially when I have plans to stick to outside of flying. Airport standbys can be a bit of a wildcard; you might not get called on immediately, but when you do, it usually means a well-paid, quick assignment. I've had instances where I was called near the end of the standby period and ended up flying a leg that paid well without losing much personal time. This flexibility is invaluable, especially during busy weeks when schedules can be unpredictable. Another thing that surprises people outside the aviation industry is how paid standby hours add up. Even if you're not actively flying, you're compensated for your readiness, which can boost your weekly earnings noticeably. From my experience, embracing these easy assignments and short layovers with an open mindset turns what others might see as downtime into an opportunity. It takes some savvy scheduling and understanding of how your airline's policies work, but the payoff is definitely worth it for those balancing work and personal life. In sharing this, I hope more flight attendants and aviation professionals realize that short layovers don’t have to be a 'bummer.' Instead, they can be a strategic part of a thriving aviation lifestyle that supports both income goals and personal well-being.
