Ever wonder what "Pilot vs ATC" talked about?
You know, pilots are not just flying! They have to communicate with the Air Traffic Controller!
Today I'm coming to answer the airspace secret code, how to get the ATC and the pilot to the exact same thing. ✈️
Have you ever wondered how, in the sky where planes are busy, pilots and ATC talk about fast things and don't miss them? The trick is something called "Standard Phraseology," or the standard language of flight.
🍔 Compare it easily.
Imagine when we order a meal. "Elder, please, chicken basil, fried eggs, not spicy, not with lentils, a little rice." Before finishing talking, the seller will repeat the order, waste a lot of time and have a high chance of making a mistake.
But in the sky...Every second is safe! We can't use that kind of extravagant language, so Standard Phraseology comes to manage the frame of speech to be "short, concise and meaningful." Do not interpret ambiguity to prevent miscommunication.
💡 Change normal speech to look more pro and safe:
Instead of the kind of English we normally talk about, in aviation they use these words instead, with examples:
❌ Don't use: "Yes" or "I heard you."
✅ Use the word: "Roger" (acknowledge the message sent).
Example: ATC: "Climb and maintain flight level 350." / Pilot: "Roger."
❌ Don't use: "I will do it."
✅ use the word: "Wilco" (short for Will Comply = acknowledge the message and will follow now).
Example: ATC: "Turn right heading 090." / Pilot: "Wilco."
❌ Don't use: "Can you repeat that, please?"
✅ Use the word: "Say again" (Please repeat the message again).
(Caution: In military or combat aviation, the word "Repeat" is avoided because it is an artillery command that means "to relaunch at the original target." Use the wrong word can lead to a big deal!)
❌ Don't use: "We are ready to go."
✅ use the word: "Ready for departure" (pilots and ATC reserve the word "Take-off" only when they are allowed to run up to prevent the plane from going out early).
In short,
Standard Phraseology [ICAO DOC 9432] is like the "decisive grammar of flight" that cuts off effluent, reduces risk, and makes the lives of both pilots and ATC much easier to work together!
