Lately, I've found myself constantly reflecting on Luke 10:41, the verse where Jesus tells Martha that Mary has 'chosen the good portion.' It's so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, isn't it? We're all Martha sometimes, busy with countless tasks, worrying about so many things, feeling overwhelmed by our to-do lists and the expectations of the world. I know I am! But this verse is such a gentle, yet powerful, reminder to pause and consider what truly matters. It's not that Martha's work was unimportant; someone needs to prepare meals and host! But Mary chose something else in that moment: presence, learning, and connection with Jesus. For me, that 'good portion' isn't about neglecting responsibilities, but about prioritizing what nourishes my soul and brings genuine peace. I’ve been trying to apply this in my own life, especially when I feel stretched thin. It’s about consciously choosing moments of stillness and reflection. Sometimes, it’s as simple as stepping outside and taking in a beautiful 'scenic view' – maybe a quiet 'lake' at dawn, or the vibrant colors of 'autumn trees' against a clear 'blue sky.' Those moments in nature remind me to slow down and truly see the beauty around me, finding solace in simple things. It’s also about discerning what deserves my energy. Are all the 'many things' I’m worried about truly essential? Or am I letting distractions pull me away from what truly feeds my spirit? I’ve started setting aside dedicated time for spiritual reflection, even if it’s just 15 minutes in the morning. It's amazing how much difference it makes in setting the tone for the day and helping me approach challenges with a calmer heart. Another way I try to 'choose the good portion' is by being fully present with loved ones. It’s so tempting to check my phone or think about the next task, but actively listening and engaging makes those connections so much richer. It’s like when you’re admiring 'mountains' in the distance – you don't multitask; you just soak in the view and appreciate the moment. It’s about making conscious choices about where your attention goes. This verse has encouraged me to simplify my life. To let go of the need for perfection in everything and instead, embrace intentionality. It's a continuous journey, of course, but recognizing the choice we have, just like Mary did, brings such a sense of liberation.
