Why is it so hard to forget certain people? A delete button needed for my brain

Random Thoughts

💭What's on my mind: I keep thinking of what could’ve been. And still can be but right now I’m not feeling confident.

Current Mood: Feeling lonely and overthinking about things that I would rather put away in a “Do not take out until needed” drawer.

... Read moreSometimes, trying to forget someone feels almost impossible because our brains are wired to hold onto emotional memories, especially those tied to significant experiences or feelings. I’ve found that moments I wish to erase, like the beautiful memories mentioned, often replay in my mind when I’m alone or feeling vulnerable. It’s natural to feel lonely and have our thoughts spiral. Overthinking can make us dwell on “what could’ve been,” which only magnifies feelings of sadness or regret. What helps me is creating mental boundaries—like the idea of a "Do not take out until needed" drawer for difficult thoughts. Whenever those intrusive memories arise, I gently remind myself that these are just thoughts, not facts demanding my full attention right now. Journaling can also serve as a way to transfer these swirling thoughts somewhere safe, reducing their hold on my mind. Another useful approach is to engage actively in the present moment. This might include practicing mindfulness or focusing on simple daily activities to ground yourself. Although it’s tough, embracing the discomfort and allowing yourself to feel lonely sometimes is part of emotional healing. Lastly, seeking connection—whether through friends, family, or a supportive community—can be a powerful balm when you’re feeling stuck in these endless loops. Remember, it’s okay not to have all the answers immediately. Healing is a process, and each small step towards self-compassion can help ease the relentless cycle of overthinking and longing.
